CWE-93
AllowedImproper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences ('CRLF Injection')
Abstraction: Base · Status: Draft
The product uses CRLF (carriage return line feeds) as a special element, e.g. to separate lines or records, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CRLF sequences from inputs.
385 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

When an application passes a custom envelope object with a size property containing CRLF characters to sendMail(), the value is concatenated into the SMTP MAIL FROM command (as SIZE=...) without sanitization, allowing injection of arbitrary SMTP commands such as RCPT TO to silently add attacker-controlled recipients. Exploitation requires the application to expose the envelope size to attacker-controlled input, as Nodemailer does not include size in the default auto-constructed envelope."

{
"lang": "en",
"value": "cpp-httplib is a C++ header-only HTTP/HTTPS library. In version 0.49.0, the chunked-response trailer output path writes trailer header names and values directly to the socket without validating them, allowing CRLF sequences in a trailer field to inject additional headers or split the HTTP response. Unlike every other header-writing path in the library, the trailer-writing code applies none of the field-name and field-value checks that reject carriage return and line feed, so an application that places attacker-influenced data into a chunked response trailer emits attacker-controlled CRLF onto the wire. This enables HTTP response splitting, letting an attacker forge response headers or inject a second response. This issue is fixed in version 0.50.0."

"value": "Reverse::Proxy versions before 0.04 for Perl allow HTTP request smuggling via a percent-decoded PATH_INFO written unencoded to the upstream request line.\n\nPSGI hands PATH_INFO to an application percent-decoded, so a %XX sequence in the client URL has become a raw byte by the time the proxy sees it. The proxy appends that byte string to the upstream base URL, and for an Upgrade tunnel writes it into a request line it serializes itself, re-encoding nothing in either path. The HTTP client that sends the resulting URL does not validate the target either. A path containing %0d%0a therefore arrives at the upstream as a CRLF that ends the request line, and a decoded space, \u0027?\u0027 or \u0027#\u0027 truncates it the same way.\n\nEverything the client writes after the CRLF is read by the upstream as a second request. On the buffered path it arrives on a keep-alive connection the proxy pools and reuses for other clients. Its method, path and headers are all chosen by the client, and the upstream attributes it to the proxy, so it reaches upstream paths that the proxy\u0027s own routing does not expose."

Its multipart part-header parser splits header lines only on the two-byte carriage-return line-feed sequence, so a lone carriage return or line feed embedded in a part header is not treated as a line break and is carried verbatim into the parsed Content-Disposition filename and field name handed to the application. An attacker who uploads a file whose filename or field name contains a bare carriage return or line feed can inject control characters into consumers that trust the parser to return clean values, enabling filesystem filename pollution, log forging, or header injection when the value is forwarded to a carriage-return-sensitive sink. All versions of @fastify/busboy up to and including 3.2.1 are affected. The issue is fixed in version 3.2.2, which rejects any header line that still contains a bare carriage return or line feed. Mitigation
Avoid using CRLF as a special sequence.
Mitigation
Appropriately filter or quote CRLF sequences in user-controlled input.
CAPEC-15: Command Delimiters
An attack of this type exploits a programs' vulnerabilities that allows an attacker's commands to be concatenated onto a legitimate command with the intent of targeting other resources such as the file system or database. The system that uses a filter or denylist input validation, as opposed to allowlist validation is vulnerable to an attacker who predicts delimiters (or combinations of delimiters) not present in the filter or denylist. As with other injection attacks, the attacker uses the command delimiter payload as an entry point to tunnel through the application and activate additional attacks through SQL queries, shell commands, network scanning, and so on.
CAPEC-81: Web Server Logs Tampering
Web Logs Tampering attacks involve an attacker injecting, deleting or otherwise tampering with the contents of web logs typically for the purposes of masking other malicious behavior. Additionally, writing malicious data to log files may target jobs, filters, reports, and other agents that process the logs in an asynchronous attack pattern. This pattern of attack is similar to "Log Injection-Tampering-Forging" except that in this case, the attack is targeting the logs of the web server and not the application.
