Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-470

Allowed

Use of Externally-Controlled Input to Select Classes or Code ('Unsafe Reflection')

Abstraction: Base · Status: Draft

The product uses external input with reflection to select which classes or code to use, but it does not sufficiently prevent the input from selecting improper classes or code.

156 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Summary
Statamic CMS's unsafe method invocation via collection sorting allows data destruction
Details

Impact

The fix for GHSA-4jjr-vmv7-wh4w was incomplete. It addressed the issue in the query builder, but the same protection was not applied to in-memory collection sorting. Manipulating sort parameters could result in the loss of content and assets.

This requires a front-end template that passes request input into a tag's sort parameter. It is not exploitable by default — a template would need to be explicitly set up to sort by a visitor-controlled value.

Patches

This has been fixed in 5.73.23 and 6.20.0.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-08-28 18:31 – Updated: 2026-08-28 18:31

Details

An unsafe dynamic class loading vulnerability exists in the database connection utilities of PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG. The application instantiates database driver classes based on configurable driver names without validating against an allowlist of approved drivers. If an attacker can manipulate system configuration parameters, this enables the execution of arbitrary Java bytecode residing on the application classpath under the security context of the PaperCut server process.

Summary
cakephp/debug_kit: MailPreview contains unsafe reflection
Details

Impact

The MailPreview feature of debugkit is vulnerable to arbitrary constructor execution. For an application to be vulnerable the following conditions must be true:

  1. debug mode must be enabled.
  2. The hostname must match a 'local' domain or be in an allowlist.

Patches

5.2.4 and 4.10.3 contain patches for this issue.

Workarounds

Ensure that debugkit is only part of your development dependencies, and that debug mode is disabled in production environments.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-23 12:32 – Updated: 2026-07-23 12:32
VLAI
Details

Grav versions >= 1.7.0 and before 2.0.9 contain a remote code execution vulnerability. FlexDirectory::dynamicDataField() resolves blueprint data-*@: directives by calling call_user_func_array() on attacker-influenced input, validating only that the target is callable (is_callable()) without restricting dangerous functions such as exec, system, passthru, or shell_exec. Because FlexDirectory registers this handler for every Flex directory, it bypasses the validation added to Blueprint::dynamicData() in 2.0.7 (GHSA-fj2p-qj2f-74v5). Any authenticated user with create or update permission on any Flex-based directory (Flex Users, Flex Pages, Flex Objects, or custom Flex types) can execute arbitrary shell commands on the server.

Details

A JEXL expression sandbox bypass exists in multiple versions of OpenNMS Meridian and Horizon. A low-privileged authenticated user can submit a crafted expression to the Measurements REST API that escapes the sandbox and loads arbitrary Java classes on the server. This can potentially allow an attacker to gain access to confidential information and compromise integrity.

The solution is to upgrade to Meridian 2024.3.12, 2025.0.9 and Horizon 36.0.3 or newer. Meridian and Horizon installation instructions state that they are intended for installation within an organization's private networks and should not be directly accessible from the Internet.

Summary
MessagePack-CSharp: Typeless deserialization type restrictions do not recurse into arrays or generic arguments
Details

Summary

MessagePack-CSharp's typeless deserialization includes MessagePackSerializerOptions.ThrowIfDeserializingTypeIsDisallowed(Type) as a safety check for dangerous types. The default implementation checks the outer type name, but it does not recursively inspect array element types or generic type arguments.

As a result, a type that would be blocked directly can be wrapped inside an array or constructed generic type and pass the outer type check. The formatter machinery can then materialize formatters for the inner blocked type.

Impact

Applications are affected when they deserialize untrusted payloads using typeless serialization features such as MessagePackSerializer.Typeless, TypelessObjectResolver, or related typeless resolver options.

Typeless deserialization is already a high-risk feature for untrusted data, but the presence of a disallowed-type hook creates an expectation that blocked types remain blocked. This issue weakens that mitigation because the check is not applied structurally to nested type components. An attacker who can supply typeless ext-100 payloads may bypass exact outer-type blocklist checks by naming wrapper types such as arrays or generic containers.

The consequence depends on which type is reached and what the application allows typeless deserialization to instantiate. The original findings describe bypasses involving blocked or user-blocklisted gadget types.

Affected components

  • Package: MessagePack
  • Feature: typeless deserialization
  • APIs: MessagePackSerializerOptions.ThrowIfDeserializingTypeIsDisallowed, TypelessFormatter
  • Finding IDs: MESSAGEPACKCSHARP-030, duplicate/open variant MESSAGEPACKCSHARP-OPEN-007

Patches

Fixes are available via versions 2.5.301 and 3.1.7.

Upgrade guidance:

  1. Upgrade MessagePack to the patched version for your release line.
  2. Upgrade companion MessagePack packages in the same dependency graph to the coordinated patched versions.

The fix should apply type-disallow checks recursively to array element types, pointer/byref element types where applicable, nullable underlying types, and constructed generic type arguments. Formatter paths that materialize types supplied by the wire should not instantiate inner types that fail the configured policy.

Workarounds

Patching is recommended.

Avoid typeless deserialization for untrusted data. If typeless support is unavoidable, configure an explicit allowlist that rejects any type not approved by the application and ensure the allowlist recursively validates array elements and generic arguments. Do not rely on exact outer-type blocklists as a complete security boundary.

Resources

  • MESSAGEPACKCSHARP-030: typeless disallowed-type check is not recursive
  • MESSAGEPACKCSHARP-OPEN-007: duplicate/open finding for typeless blocklist gaps
  • CWE-502: Deserialization of Untrusted Data
  • CWE-470: Use of Externally-Controlled Input to Select Classes or Code

CVE split rationale

This vulnerability is independently fixable in typeless type-policy enforcement. It is separate from MVC default options, collection allocation, LZ4 decoding, and recursion-depth issues.

Details

PyTorch Lightning through 2.6.5, fixed in commit d710d68, contains a remote code execution vulnerability in the _load_state function that imports and executes attacker-controlled module names from checkpoint _instantiator hyperparameters. Attackers can craft malicious checkpoint files that bypass weights_only=True protections to execute arbitrary code when LightningModule.load_from_checkpoint is called.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Refactor your code to avoid using reflection.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Do not use user-controlled inputs to select and load classes or code.

Mitigation
Implementation

Apply strict input validation by using allowlists or indirect selection to ensure that the user is only selecting allowable classes or code.

CAPEC-138: Reflection Injection

An adversary supplies a value to the target application which is then used by reflection methods to identify a class, method, or field. For example, in the Java programming language the reflection libraries permit an application to inspect, load, and invoke classes and their components by name. If an adversary can control the input into these methods including the name of the class/method/field or the parameters passed to methods, they can cause the targeted application to invoke incorrect methods, read random fields, or even to load and utilize malicious classes that the adversary created. This can lead to the application revealing sensitive information, returning incorrect results, or even having the adversary take control of the targeted application.
