FFmpeg 0.7.1 - 8.1.2 Out-of-Bounds Read via S/PDIF Muxer spdifenc.c
Summary
FFmpeg versions 0.7.1 through 8.1.2 contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the S/PDIF muxer that allows attackers to access memory beyond buffer boundaries by supplying a crafted DTS stream with a core_size value larger than the actual packet length. Attackers can exploit the missing bounds check in the spdif_header_dts4 function by providing a malicious DTS-HD audio stream during S/PDIF re-muxing to trigger unauthorized memory reads beyond the packet buffer.

ImageMagick: Heap Buffer Over-Read in BGR decoder due to mising end-of-file check
Summary
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. In versions prior to 7.1.2-27, the BGR decoder does not check for an end-of-file in every location so a crafted image could result in an heap buffer over-read. This issue has been fixed in version 7.1.2-27.

Out-of-bounds read via sun.misc.Unsafe in Apache Fory. When out-of-band zero-copy deserialization is used, readAlignedVarUint() can read beyond the bounds of the underlying buffer. Out-of-band zero-copy deserialization is an opt-in feature; applications that do not use it are not affected. This issue affects Apache Fory (formerly Apache Fury): from 0.5.0 before 1.4.0. Versions before 0.11.0 were published under the Maven coordinates org.apache.fury:fury-core. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.4.0, which fixes the issue.

ONNX: Heap-Buffer-Overflow READ in Gemm Version Converter Adapter via Undersized Input Shape
Summary
Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) is an open standard for machine learning interoperability. From 1.3.0 until 1.22.0, onnx.version_converter.convert_version() can perform an out-of-bounds read in Gemm_7_6::adapt_gemm_7_6() in onnx/version_converter/adapters/gemm_7_6.h when a Gemm node has input tensors with fewer than two dimensions because B_shape[1], A_shape[0], or A_shape[1] is accessed without a rank check, potentially causing a process crash during an opset 7 to 6 downgrade. This issue is fixed in version 1.22.0.

Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
  • To reduce the likelihood of introducing an out-of-bounds read, ensure that you validate and ensure correct calculations for any length argument, buffer size calculation, or offset. Be especially careful of relying on a sentinel (i.e. special character such as NUL) in untrusted inputs.

CAPEC-540: Overread Buffers

An adversary attacks a target by providing input that causes an application to read beyond the boundary of a defined buffer. This typically occurs when a value influencing where to start or stop reading is set to reflect positions outside of the valid memory location of the buffer. This type of attack may result in exposure of sensitive information, a system crash, or arbitrary code execution.
