Vulnerability from csaf_trumpfsecokg - Published: 2024-01-23 07:00 - Updated: 2024-01-23 07:00
Summary
TRUMPF: Oseon contains vulnerable version of OpenSSL 1.1.x
Notes
Summary: Multiple vulnerabilities in the included versions of OpenSSL can lead to different problems, including crashes of the OpenSSL modules (leading to a Denial of Service) or leakage of plaintext. These underlying vulnerabilities can be fixed by installing a software update provided by TRUMPF.
Impact: The TRUMPF products enumerated above include a vulnerable version of OpenSSL 1.1.x which can be exploited to crash the application or to attack some encryption modes, revealing plain text. This can impact confidentiality, integrity and availability of information on the affected system.
Mitigation: Please contact your TRUMPF Service with the PR number 500876.

Calls to EVP_CipherUpdate, EVP_EncryptUpdate and EVP_DecryptUpdate may overflow the output length argument in some cases where the input length is close to the maximum permissable length for an integer on the platform. In such cases the return value from the function call will be 1 (indicating success), but the output length value will be negative. This could cause applications to behave incorrectly or crash. OpenSSL versions 1.1.1i and below are affected by this issue. Users of these versions should upgrade to OpenSSL 1.1.1j. OpenSSL versions 1.0.2x and below are affected by this issue. However OpenSSL 1.0.2 is out of support and no longer receiving public updates. Premium support customers of OpenSSL 1.0.2 should upgrade to 1.0.2y. Other users should upgrade to 1.1.1j. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1j (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1i). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2y (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2x).

CWE-190 - Integer Overflow or Wraparound
Mitigation Please contact your TRUMPF Service with the PR number 500876.

In order to decrypt SM2 encrypted data an application is expected to call the API function EVP_PKEY_decrypt(). Typically an application will call this function twice. The first time, on entry, the "out" parameter can be NULL and, on exit, the "outlen" parameter is populated with the buffer size required to hold the decrypted plaintext. The application can then allocate a sufficiently sized buffer and call EVP_PKEY_decrypt() again, but this time passing a non-NULL value for the "out" parameter. A bug in the implementation of the SM2 decryption code means that the calculation of the buffer size required to hold the plaintext returned by the first call to EVP_PKEY_decrypt() can be smaller than the actual size required by the second call. This can lead to a buffer overflow when EVP_PKEY_decrypt() is called by the application a second time with a buffer that is too small. A malicious attacker who is able present SM2 content for decryption to an application could cause attacker chosen data to overflow the buffer by up to a maximum of 62 bytes altering the contents of other data held after the buffer, possibly changing application behaviour or causing the application to crash. The location of the buffer is application dependent but is typically heap allocated. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1l (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1k).

CWE-120 - Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input ('Classic Buffer Overflow')
Mitigation Please contact your TRUMPF Service with the PR number 500876.

AES OCB mode for 32-bit x86 platforms using the AES-NI assembly optimised implementation will not encrypt the entirety of the data under some circumstances. This could reveal sixteen bytes of data that was preexisting in the memory that wasn't written. In the special case of "in place" encryption, sixteen bytes of the plaintext would be revealed. Since OpenSSL does not support OCB based cipher suites for TLS and DTLS, they are both unaffected. Fixed in OpenSSL 3.0.5 (Affected 3.0.0-3.0.4). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1q (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1p).

CWE-327 - Use of a Broken or Risky Cryptographic Algorithm
Mitigation Please contact your TRUMPF Service with the PR number 500876.
