RHSA-2026:71657
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2026-09-24 16:46 - Updated: 2026-09-25 10:22A race condition was found in the Linux kernel cryptographic user API, AF_ALG in the way concurrent writes to the same AF_ALG socket are handled. Interleaved data and inconsistent internal socket state may result. A local user could use this flaw to crash the system or corrupt cryptographic operation results, causing a denial of service or data integrity issues.

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's netfilter bridge ebtables SNAT (Source Network Address Translation) module. This vulnerability allows a local attacker on a system configured with specific bridge netfilter rules to improperly modify underlying memory pages during an ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) sender hardware address rewrite. This could lead to unintended system behavior, a denial of service, or potentially local privilege escalation, where an attacker gains higher access rights than intended.
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) implementation. This vulnerability occurs because a pointer to network packet data is not updated after memory is reallocated, leading to the use of an outdated memory address. An attacker with local access could potentially trigger this condition, causing memory corruption. This could result in a system crash (denial of service) or other unpredictable system behavior.
A flaw was found in the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) implementation within the Linux kernel. An integer overflow occurs when the `transport_count` for an association exceeds its 16-bit limit, causing it to wrap around to zero. This allows a diagnostic dump to write 8 MiB of peer addresses beyond the intended memory buffer, leading to an out-of-bounds write. This memory corruption can result in a denial of service (DoS) due to system instability or crashes.
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's xfrm subsystem, specifically within the AH6 (Authentication Header for IPv6) module. The `ipv6_rearrange_rthdr()` function does not properly validate the `segments_left` field in routing headers when processing raw IPv6 HDRINCL packets. This oversight allows an attacker to craft a malicious packet that can cause an out-of-bounds memory access, potentially leading to memory corruption.
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's TUN/TAP driver. An integer underflow vulnerability exists in the tun_get_user() function when processing oversized headroom requests. This can occur if Open vSwitch (OVS) propagates an excessively large headroom request to the TUN or TAP device. Successful exploitation could lead to memory corruption, where network packet data is written outside its intended buffer, potentially causing a denial of service or other system instability.

Given the kernel\u0027s fundamental role, any bug has a higher chance of impacting system security, even if that impact only becomes clear after a fix is published. Therefore, Red Hat prioritizes delivering fixes that improve our customers\u0027 overall security posture.\n\nBecause of this proactive approach, a patch may be associated with a CVE assignment at a future date. Retroactive CVE assignments are always documented in the corresponding errata and on Red Hat\u0027s CVE pages. We strongly advise against delaying updates, as doing so may leave your system exposed when protections are already available.",

An attack could leverage user namespaces to obtain elevated network permissions within the namespace, then sends specially crafted IPv6 packets with malformed Authentication Header routing headers. Exploitation is challenging but achievable due to complex setup including IPv6 AH/XFRM, ESP-in-UDP encapsulation, and specific timing and memory layout conditions. "details": "For details on how to apply this update, which includes the changes described in this advisory, refer to:\n\nhttps://access.redhat.com/articles/11258\n\nThe system must be rebooted for this update to take effect.\n\nRed Hat recommends treating all kernel errata as security-relevant.

The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
