VAR-201404-0683

Vulnerability from variot - Updated: 2025-04-13 23:32

EMC RSA BSAFE Micro Edition Suite (MES) 3.2.x before 3.2.6 and 4.0.x before 4.0.5 does not properly validate X.509 certificate chains, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via a crafted certificate chain. Successfully exploiting this issue allows attackers to create improper authenticated SSL connections, which will aid in further attacks. RSA BSAFE Micro Edition Suite (MES) 4.0.x versions prior to 4.0.5 and 3.2.x version prior to 3.2.6 are vulnerable. The toolkit helps developers achieve stable and secure application design. The vulnerability stems from the fact that the program does not properly validate the X.509 certificate chain. MES 4.0.5 and 3.2.6 are designed to address this issue by performing proper certificate validation.

Recommendation: RSA strongly recommends that customers on MES 4.0.x upgrade to MES 4.0.5 and customers on MES 3.2.x upgrade to MES 3.2.6 at the earliest opportunity.

"data": "EMC RSA BSAFE Micro Edition Suite (MES) 3.2.x before 3.2.6 and 4.0.x before 4.0.5 does not properly validate X.509 certificate chains, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via a crafted certificate chain. \nSuccessfully exploiting this issue allows attackers to create improper authenticated SSL connections, which will aid in further attacks. \nRSA BSAFE Micro Edition Suite (MES) 4.0.x versions prior to 4.0.5 and 3.2.x version prior to 3.2.6 are vulnerable. The toolkit helps developers achieve stable and secure application design. The vulnerability stems from the fact that the program does not properly validate the X.509 certificate chain. MES 4.0.5 and 3.2.6 are designed to address this issue by performing proper certificate validation. \n \nRecommendation:\nRSA strongly recommends that customers on MES 4.0.x upgrade to MES 4.0.5 and customers on MES 3.2.x upgrade to MES 3.2.6 at the earliest opportunity. \n \nObtaining Downloads: \nTo request your upgrade of the software, please call your local support telephone number (contact phone numbers are available at http://www.emc.com/support/rsa/contact/phone-numbers.htm) for most expedient service. \n\nObtaining Documentation:\nTo obtain RSA documentation, log on to RSA SecurCare Online at https://knowledge.rsasecurity.com and click Products in the top navigation menu. Select the specific product whose documentation you want to obtain. Scroll to the section for the product version that you want and click the set link. \n\nSeverity Rating:\nFor an explanation of Severity Ratings, refer to the Knowledge Base Article, \\x93Security Advisories Severity Rating\\x94 at https://knowledge.rsasecurity.com/scolcms/knowledge.aspx?solution=a46604. RSA recommends all customers take into account both the base score and any relevant temporal and environmental scores which may impact the potential severity associated with particular security vulnerability. \n\nObtaining More Information:\nFor more information about RSA products, visit the RSA web site at http://www.rsa.com. \n\nGetting Support and Service:\nFor customers with current maintenance contracts, contact your local RSA Customer Support center with any additional questions regarding this RSA SecurCare Note. Drag nodes to arrange them. Double-click a related vulnerability to open it, or a source to visit its link. The Physics button on the left tunes the layout and the simulation; the legend at the bottom left hides or shows nodes by kind and by sighting type.

Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

Nomenclature

  • Seen: The vulnerability was mentioned, discussed, or observed by the user.
  • Confirmed: The vulnerability has been validated from an analyst's perspective.
  • Published Proof of Concept: A public proof of concept is available for this vulnerability.
  • Exploited: The vulnerability was observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
  • Patched: The vulnerability was observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.
  • Not exploited: The vulnerability was not observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
  • Not confirmed: The user expressed doubt about the validity of the vulnerability.
  • Not patched: The vulnerability was not observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.

How durations are calculated

Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.

Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.

    Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
