VAR-200412-0292
Vulnerability from variot - Updated: 2025-04-03 22:21passwd 0.68 does not check the return code for the pam_start function, which has unknown impact and attack vectors that may prevent "safe and proper operation" of PAM. Two potential security issues reportedly affect the implementation of passwd included with Mandrake Linux, according to Mandrake advisory MDKSA-2004:045. According to the report, passwords supplied to passwd via stdin are incorrectly one character shorter than they should be. It is not known whether this behavior occurs at the interactive prompt or if the implementation allows for passwords to be "piped" to passwd through stdin. This may or may not have security implications as the user's password will not be stored correctly and the user will not be able to login. It is conceivable that this could result in a less secure password. The second issue reported by Mandrake is that PAM may not be initialized correctly and "safe and proper" operation may not be ensured. Further technical details are not known. Mandrake Linux is an open source operating system

How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.
