RHSA-2005:275
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2005-05-18 13:00 - Updated: 2026-06-28 12:09The binfmt_elf loader (binfmt_elf.c) in Linux kernel 2.4.x up to 2.4.27, and 2.6.x up to 2.6.8, may create an interpreter name string that is not NULL terminated, which could cause strings longer than PATH_MAX to be used, leading to buffer overflows that allow local users to cause a denial of service (hang) and possibly execute arbitrary code.

"text": "The ia32el package contains IA-32 Execution Layer platform which allows\nemulation of IA-32 binaries on IA-64.\n\nA flaw was found in the binfmt_elf loader of the Linux kernel which also\naffects the IA-32 Execution Layer. A local user could create an\ninterpreter name string that is not NULL terminated, leading to a denial of\nservice (crash). The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project\n(cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-1072 to this issue.\n\nThis update also addresses the following issues:\n\n-- Fixed execve to invoke ia32 interpreter\n-- Credential fixes\n-- Fixed a bug causing ibm-jvm to fail\n-- Other minor bug fixes\n\nPlease refer to the package release notes for detailed information about\nthese changes.\n\nAll users of ia32el should upgrade to this updated package, which\nresolves these issues.",

"details": "Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata\nrelevant to your system have been applied.\n\nTo update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:\n\nrpm -Fvh [filenames]\n\nwhere [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those\nRPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are\nnot installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you\ncan also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the\ndesired RPMs.\n\nPlease note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many\npeople find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,\nlaunch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:\n\nup2date\n\nThis will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate\nRPMs being upgraded on your system.",
