Title
Bluetooth: L2CAP: do not leave dangling sk pointer on error in l2cap_sock_create()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: L2CAP: do not leave dangling sk pointer on error in l2cap_sock_create() bt_sock_alloc() allocates the sk object and attaches it to the provided sock object. On error l2cap_sock_alloc() frees the sk object, but the dangling pointer is still attached to the sock object, which may create use-after-free in other code.
AV:L - The vulnerable path is entered only from the local `socket(AF_BLUETOOTH, SOCK_SEQPACKET, BTPROTO_L2CAP)` syscall via `__sock_create()` → `bt_sock_create()` → `l2cap_sock_create()`; no remote or adjacent Bluetooth peer data is involved, since the inbound-connection caller `l2cap_sock_new_connection_cb()` passes `sock == NULL` and never sets a dangling pointer.
AC:L - The sole precondition is failure of `kzalloc(sizeof(*chan), GFP_ATOMIC)` in `l2cap_chan_create()`, and the attacker controls both sides — driving system memory pressure with their own allocations (GFP_ATOMIC has no reclaim fallback and fails readily under pressure) while looping on `socket()` from many threads, retrying indefinitely at no cost. No race the attacker cannot influence and no unpredictable memory layout is required.
PR:L - `l2cap_sock_create()` imposes no capability check for SOCK_SEQPACKET/SOCK_STREAM/SOCK_DGRAM — `CAP_NET_RAW` gates only SOCK_RAW and `CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE` applies later at `bind()` — so any unprivileged local user on a Bluetooth-enabled system can reach the allocation failure path.
UI:N - The attacker triggers the entire sequence themselves with a single syscall under self-induced memory pressure; no victim must open a file, pair a device, or take any other action.
S:U - The freed `struct sock`, the stale `sock->sk` reference, and every downstream effect remain within the kernel's own security authority — no hypervisor, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - `sock->sk` is left pointing at slab memory freed by `sk_free()`, and `__sock_create()`'s error path skips the `sock->sk = NULL` clearing in `__sock_release()` (it sits inside the `if (ops)` block after `sock->ops = NULL`), so any subsequent dereference reads freed memory — as KASAN-confirmed in the parent fix, `__sock_gen_cookie()` performs an 8-byte read of the dead object, and the attacker can reclaim that `l2cap_pinfo`-sized slab object by heap spray to control and disclose its contents.
I:H - The same dangling pointer yields a write primitive, not just a read: `__sock_gen_cookie()` issues `atomic64_cmpxchg(&sk->sk_cookie, ...)` into the freed object at a fixed offset, corrupting whatever attacker-groomed structure has reclaimed that slot — a classic use-after-free write usable for control-flow hijacking.
A:H - Use of the freed `struct sock` corrupts the slab allocator and produces oops or panic even when not weaponized; additionally the `DEBUG_NET_WARN_ONCE(sock->sk, ...)` added to `__sock_create()` for exactly this bug class fires on CONFIG_DEBUG_NET kernels, which is fatal under `panic_on_warn`."

Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
