Title
netfilter: complete validation of user input
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
netfilter: complete validation of user input
In my recent commit, I missed that do_replace() handlers
use copy_from_sockptr() (which I fixed), followed
by unsafe copy_from_sockptr_offset() calls.
In all functions, we can perform the @optlen validation
before even calling xt_alloc_table_info() with the following
check:
if ((u64)optlen < (u64)tmp.size + sizeof(tmp))
return -EINVAL;
Severity
7.1 (High)
SSVC
Exploitation: none
Automatable: no
Technical Impact: partial
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached through the local `setsockopt(SOL_IP, IPT_SO_SET_REPLACE, ...)` syscall on a locally-opened socket, via `nf_setsockopt()` → `do_ipt_set_ctl()` → `do_replace()`. No network packet or remote peer data reaches this code path.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls `tmp.size` and `optlen` and triggers the oversized `memcpy()` deterministically on every call — no race, no memory-layout luck, and no retry needed. The kernel-sockptr precondition is satisfied by any attached cgroup/setsockopt BPF program (even a no-op one, since `ctx.optlen` defaults to the original `optlen`), which is standard in container environments running Cilium and similar tooling on default `CONFIG_CGROUP_BPF=y` kernels.
PR:L - `do_ipt_set_ctl()` gates on `ns_capable(sock_net(sk)->user_ns, CAP_NET_ADMIN)`, which any unprivileged user obtains with `unshare -Urn`; entering a new user/net namespace leaves cgroup membership intact so the BPF sockopt hook still applies. No real root in the initial namespace is required.
UI:N - The attacker performs the entire sequence — socket creation, namespace setup, and the malformed setsockopt call — with no action by any other user or victim process.
S:U - The out-of-bounds read occurs in kernel slab memory and its impact is confined to the kernel's own security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - This is an unbounded out-of-bounds read — up to `XT_MAX_TABLE_SIZE` (512 MB) copied from a ≤PAGE_SIZE slab object into the netfilter table buffer, far beyond a "few bytes". With heap grooming to keep the resulting `ipt_entry` chain valid through `translate_table()`, the harvested kernel heap contents (pointers, keys, credentials, defeating KASLR) can be read back via `getsockopt(IPT_SO_GET_ENTRIES)`.
I:N - The defect is purely an over-read; the destination buffer is correctly sized by `xt_alloc_table_info(tmp.size)`, so no memory outside an allocation is written and no control-flow or data corruption primitive is produced.
A:H - A large attacker-chosen `tmp.size` makes the kernel `memcpy()` run hundreds of megabytes past the end of a small slab object, reliably hitting unmapped memory and causing a page fault in kernel context — an oops/panic — and the crash is trivially repeatable by any unprivileged local user.
A:H - A large attacker-chosen `tmp.size` makes the kernel `memcpy()` run hundreds of megabytes past the end of a small slab object, reliably hitting unmapped memory and causing a page fault in kernel context — an oops/panic — and the crash is trivially repeatable by any unprivileged local user."

Drag nodes to arrange them. Double-click a related vulnerability to open it, or a source to visit its link. The Physics button on the left tunes the layout and the simulation; the legend at the bottom left hides or shows nodes by kind and by sighting type.
Experimental. This forecast is provided for visualization only and may change without notice. Do not use it for operational decisions.
Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
