AV:A - The UAF is in pcan_usb_fd_decode_canmsg/decode_status on the USB bulk RX path that delivers CAN/CAN-FD frames from a PEAK USB FD adapter. In the highest realistic deployment (automotive/industrial host with the adapter already attached and the CAN netdev up), an attacker on the shared CAN bus can send frames that the adapter forwards into this decode path, which is an adjacent-segment attack analogous to Bluetooth/WiFi rather than a pure physical plug-in.
AC:L - Any received CAN frame or status message that takes the decode path calls peak_usb_netif_rx() and then dereferences the can_frame alias; the attacker fully controls frame generation on the bus and does not depend on an uncontrollable race or rare memory layout to trigger the use-after-free.
PR:N - CAN-bus peers need no host account or capability; once the PEAK interface is up in normal operation, URB completion runs in kernel context with no authentication of on-bus traffic.
UI:N - No separate victim action is required beyond the already-deployed adapter and up interface; on-bus frames are processed automatically by peak_usb_read_bulk_callback → pcan_usb_fd_decode_buf.
S:U - Impact is confined to the same host kernel that owns the peak_usb driver and skb allocator; this is ordinary kernel memory corruption, not a VM escape, IOMMU bypass, or other cross-authority boundary crossing.
C:H - This is a use-after-free of an sk_buff/can_frame after ownership transfer to netif_rx; UAF of heap objects enables reclaim and disclosure of freed object contents, so confidentiality is scored High.
I:H - The same UAF allows heap reuse of the freed skb object and is treated as providing a corruption/write primitive suitable for control-flow hijack under kernel UAF guidance, so integrity is High.
A:H - Use-after-free of skb memory after netif_rx can oops/panic when the object is reused or unmapped, and UAF bugs are scored High availability even when not fully exploited for code execution.
AV:L - The bug is reached through local ftrace registration paths (tracefs function tracer/instances/set_ftrace_filter probes, or perf_event_open function tracing) that call register_ftrace_function → ftrace_startup; there is no network or adjacent-protocol entry point.
AC:L - An attacker who can drive ftrace registration fully controls creating dynamic ops, forcing the ftrace_startup_enable failure/disable window (as syzkaller did), ignoring failed unregister, and freeing the ops, then triggering is_ftrace_trampoline via stack unwind; success is not left to uncontrolled third-party state.
PR:L - Worst reasonable deployments grant TRACE_MODE_WRITE (0640) via tracefs gid=tracing (Android atrace/perfetto, ChromeOS) or CAP_PERFMON for function tracing; these are delegatable low privileges, not init-namespace root, and are not obtainable only via full CAP_SYS_ADMIN.
UI:N - The attacker creates instances/enables the function tracer (or opens a perf ftrace event), triggers the dead-ftrace register/unregister/free sequence, and causes stack unwinding themselves with no separate victim action.
S:U - The dangling ftrace_ops UAF and any resulting memory corruption or oops remain inside the host kernel's privilege domain; this is not a VM escape, IOMMU bypass, or other cross-authority boundary crossing.
C:H - Dynamically allocated ftrace_ops remain linked on ftrace_ops_list after free, so is_ftrace_trampoline's list walk is a use-after-free that can be reclaimed/sprayed to disclose kernel memory through trampoline/next field reads.
I:H - The same UAF of struct ftrace_ops (including func/trampoline pointers) is heap-sprayable into type confusion and control-flow hijack when list walkers consume the reclaimed object, matching CVSS guidance that exploitable UAFs are Integrity High.
A:H - The confirmed syzkaller outcome is a kernel NULL pointer dereference oops in is_ftrace_trampoline while walking the stale ops list, which panics or takes down the system and can be re-triggered after the dangling entry is left behind.
AV:L - The vulnerable padata/pcrypt path is driven through local syscalls — an AF_ALG socket bound to `pcrypt(...)` submitting aead requests, and the racing teardown via crypto module autoload or the NETLINK_CRYPTO socket. No remote peer can reach or free the padata shell on its own.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race: they flood concurrent pcrypt requests to keep `padata_reorder()` spinning in its loop while triggering instance teardown, and can widen the window with CPU contention and many parallel workers. The commit confirms it reproduces with a stock LTP test (pcrypt_aead01) once the loop is delayed, meaning it is a naturally occurring, repeatable window.
PR:L - A basic unprivileged local user can both instantiate and continuously drive pcrypt via AF_ALG (`alg_bind` performs no capability check) and trigger the teardown side, since `crypto_alg_finish_registration()` → `crypto_remove_spawns()` destroys the pcrypt instance when an equal-or-higher-priority same-named implementation registers — a module autoload reachable from the same unprivileged bind path.
UI:N - Exploitation is entirely attacker-driven through socket operations and crypto requests; no victim action, mount, or file open is required.
S:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel slab memory and stays within the kernel's own security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed.
C:H - Reclaiming the freed `struct parallel_data` gives the attacker control of `pd->reorder_list`, whose per-CPU dereference in `padata_find_next()` becomes an attacker-directed kernel read, and `pd->ps->pinst` is likewise dereferenced — yielding disclosure of arbitrary kernel memory.
I:H - The same UAF provides write primitives — `list_del_init()` unlink on an attacker-controlled reorder list, `++pd->processed` / `pd->cpu` writes, and most severely `queue_work(pinst->serial_wq, &pd->reorder_work)` invoking a function pointer living in freed, sprayable memory, enabling control-flow hijack and privilege escalation.
A:H - Even unweaponized, the slab-use-after-free reported by KASAN dereferences freed percpu and workqueue pointers from a kworker context, reliably producing an oops or kernel panic and taking the system down.
AV:L - Exploitation requires configuring an hfsc qdisc with a netem child (duplicate enabled) via RTNETLINK/tc and then transmitting packets locally, so the attacker must have local access to the system. Per kernel scoring guidance, tc/netlink qdisc bugs are Local.
AC:L - The reentrancy is deterministic — netem's duplicate path re-enters hfsc_enqueue() synchronously on the same CPU before the child qdisc's qlen is incremented, so a single packet with duplicate=100% reliably double-activates the class. No race or uncontrolled memory-layout condition is involved.
PR:L - Qdisc/class creation requires CAP_NET_ADMIN, but only ns_capable() over the netns owner user namespace (netlink_net_capable in rtnetlink_rcv_msg), which any unprivileged user obtains with `unshare -Urn` on default distro configs. Triggering enqueue only needs sending a packet over the local device.
UI:N - The attacker performs every step — qdisc/class setup, packet transmission, and class deletion — with no action from any other user or administrator.
S:U - The corruption and its consequences are confined to the kernel's own memory and scheduling structures within the same security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The freed hfsc_class remains linked in the parent's vt_tree/cf_tree and the eligible rbtree, so subsequent rbtree traversals read attacker-groomed heap contents; a UAF of a slab object with reclaimed contents yields a kernel information-disclosure primitive.
I:H - Stale rb_node links cause rb_insert_color()/rb_erase()/vttree_update() to write into freed memory that the attacker can reclaim with a controlled object, giving a write primitive suitable for control-flow hijacking and privilege escalation. The doubly-inserted el_node additionally corrupts the eligible rbtree structure itself.
A:H - Even without weaponization, the use-after-free and corrupted rbtree produce oopses, hangs on cyclic tree traversal, or a kernel panic, taking the whole system down.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

sch_hfsc: Fix qlen accounting bug when using peek in hfsc_enqueue()

When enqueuing the first packet to an HFSC class, hfsc_enqueue() calls the
child qdisc's peek() operation before incrementing sch->q.qlen and
sch->qstats.backlog. If the child qdisc uses qdisc_peek_dequeued(), this may
trigger an immediate dequeue and potential packet drop. In such cases,
qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog() is called, but the HFSC qdisc's qlen and backlog
have not yet been updated, leading to inconsistent queue accounting. This
can leave an empty HFSC class in the active list, causing further
consequences like use-after-free.

This patch fixes the bug by moving the increment of sch->q.qlen and
sch->qstats.backlog before the call to the child qdisc's peek() operation.
This ensures that queue length and backlog are always accurate when packet
drops or dequeues are triggered during the peek.
AV:L - Triggering requires configuring an HFSC qdisc with an RSC service curve and a peek-dequeueing child qdisc (netem/codel/fq_codel/tbf) via RTM_NEWQDISC/RTM_NEWTCLASS netlink, then transmitting a packet locally. Per kernel scoring guidance, tc/netlink qdisc configuration is a local attack vector.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls both the qdisc hierarchy (hfsc + netem with an inner qdisc that rejects on enqueue) and the packet that drives hfsc_enqueue(), so the peek-time drop and the resulting qlen underflow are triggered deterministically with no race to win and no reliance on uncontrolled state.
PR:L - Qdisc configuration is gated by netlink_net_capable(CAP_NET_ADMIN) against the netns owning user_ns, which any unprivileged user obtains via `unshare -Urn` and then applies to lo/dummy/veth inside the namespace. No real root in the init namespace is needed.
UI:N - The attacker performs the qdisc setup and generates the triggering traffic entirely on their own; no victim action or interaction is required.
S:U - The corruption is confined to kernel scheduler state in the same security authority; it is a standard local kernel privilege escalation with no crossing of a VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary.
C:H - The accounting inconsistency leaves a freed/empty hfsc_class linked in the eligible and vt-trees, and the commit explicitly states this leads to use-after-free; a UAF on a ~512-byte generic-kmalloc object with embedded rb_nodes yields a controlled read primitive over sprayed kernel objects.
I:H - Dangling rb_node linkage of a freed hfsc_class means subsequent eltree/vttree insert, update, and rebalance operations write attacker-influenced values into reclaimed heap memory, giving a write primitive suitable for control-flow hijacking and privilege escalation.
A:H - Even without full exploitation, the q.qlen/backlog underflow to 0xFFFFFFFF and the stale active-list entry cause use-after-free oopses, KASAN splats, and reported infinite loops in hfsc_dequeue(), crashing or hanging the machine.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net_sched: hfsc: Address reentrant enqueue adding class to eltree twice

Savino says:
"We are writing to report that this recent patch
(141d34391abbb315d68556b7c67ad97885407547) [1]
can be bypassed, and a UAF can still occur when HFSC is utilized with
NETEM.

The patch only checks the cl->cl_nactive field to determine whether
it is the first insertion or not [2], but this field is only
incremented by init_vf [3].

By using HFSC_RSC (which uses init_ed) [4], it is possible to bypass the
check and insert the class twice in the eltree.
Under normal conditions, this would lead to an infinite loop in
hfsc_dequeue for the reasons we already explained in this report [5].

However, if TBF is added as root qdisc and it is configured with a
very low rate,
it can be utilized to prevent packets from being dequeued.
This behavior can be exploited to perform subsequent insertions in the
HFSC eltree and cause a UAF."

To fix both the UAF and the infinite loop, with netem as an hfsc child,
check explicitly in hfsc_enqueue whether the class is already in the eltree
whenever the HFSC_RSC flag is set.

[1] https://web.git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=141d34391abbb315d68556b7c67ad97885407547
[2] https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.15-rc5/source/net/sched/sch_hfsc.c#L1572
[3] https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.15-rc5/source/net/sched/sch_hfsc.c#L677
[4] https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.15-rc5/source/net/sched/sch_hfsc.c#L1574
[5] https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/8DuRWwfqjoRDLDmBMlIfbrsZg9Gx50DHJc1ilxsEBNe2D6NMoigR_eIRIG0LOjMc3r10nUUZtArXx4oZBIdUfZQrwjcQhdinnMis_0G7VEk=@willsroot.io/T/#u
AV:L - Exploitation requires configuring an HFSC qdisc with an RSC-only class, a netem child with duplication, and a rate-limiting root qdisc via tc/rtnetlink, then transmitting packets locally through it. Remote peers cannot set up or reach this configuration, so local access is required.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls every precondition — the HFSC_RSC class flags, netem's duplicate probability (settable to 100%), and the TBF rate that stalls dequeue — so the reentrant double-insertion is triggered deterministically on demand, with no race or state outside attacker control.
PR:L - CAP_NET_ADMIN is required for tc configuration, but rtnetlink checks it namespace-relative, so an unprivileged user obtains it by creating a user+network namespace (unshare -Urn) and building the qdisc hierarchy on a loopback/dummy device inside it.
UI:N - The attacker performs the qdisc setup and generates the triggering traffic entirely on their own; no action by any other user or administrator is involved.
S:U - The corruption is confined to kernel heap memory managed by the same kernel security authority; there is no crossing of a VM, IOMMU, or other trust boundary.
C:H - The stale eligible-tree edge to a freed hfsc_class yields a use-after-free that is read from during rbtree traversal in eltree_get_mindl()/eltree_get_minel(), and reclaiming the freed slab object with attacker-controlled data gives an arbitrary kernel-memory read primitive.
I:H - rb_insert_color() and rb_erase() write parent/color pointers into the freed object and into attacker-groomed neighbors, providing a controllable write primitive on reclaimed heap memory that is leverageable for full local privilege escalation.
A:H - Even without full exploitation, the double insertion causes an infinite loop in hfsc_dequeue() or a use-after-free oops/panic, hanging or crashing the kernel."

While I don't see any
way in which that immediately leads to kernel memory corruption, it is
really weird and unexpected.

Fix it with an explicit broadcast IPI through tlb_remove_table_sync_one(),
just like we do in khugepaged when removing page tables for a THP
collapse.
en
AV:L - The race is driven entirely through local syscalls — a PUD-aligned MAP_SHARED hugetlbfs/MAP_HUGETLB mapping plus munmap/mremap/mprotect/fallocate to trigger huge_pmd_unshare(), raced against gup_fast() reached via O_DIRECT, io_uring registered buffers or vmsplice. There is no network-facing path into mm/hugetlb.c.
AC:L - The attacker controls every participant: one thread issues the GUP-fast pin, a sibling thread issues the unmap that calls huge_pmd_unshare(), and a second attacker process reuses the now-exclusively-owned PMD table, and the whole sequence can be looped indefinitely. The gup_fast() IRQ-disabled window can additionally be widened by requesting a full PUD-sized pin range, since the PUD is latched once at the start of gup_fast_pud_range() while the PMD loop then walks 512 entries.
PR:L - hugetlb_file_setup() performs no capable() check for MAP_HUGETLB anonymous mappings, and none of huge_pmd_unshare()'s callers or the GUP-fast entry points require any capability, so an ordinary local user account suffices. Only a configured hugepage pool is needed, which is standard on cloud, virtualization, DPDK and database hosts.
UI:N - Exploitation is fully self-contained — the attacker forks its own second process to establish PMD sharing and to repurpose the unshared page table. No victim action is required at any point.
S:U - The defect and its impact are both within the kernel's own memory-management security authority, with no VM, IOMMU or sandbox boundary crossed. This is a standard kernel memory-safety/privilege-escalation shape, so scope remains Unchanged.
C:H - A gup_fast() walker that latched the stale PUD proceeds to walk a PMD table that now backs a different process's address space, pinning and returning struct pages that belong to that other mm. Handing those pages to O_DIRECT or vmsplice yields a direct read primitive against another process's memory, which on hosts where a hugetlbfs segment is shared across trust boundaries (QEMU/vhost-user, DPDK/SPDK, shared DB segments) discloses privileged data.
I:H - The same stale walk with FOLL_WRITE returns writable pins on pages mapped by the foreign address space, so an O_DIRECT read or io_uring write into that buffer modifies another process's memory arbitrarily. It also leaves DMA pins and page reference/mapcount state established behind the back of the owning mm, corrupting page-table and pinning invariants the kernel relies on.
A:H - GUP-fast traversing page tables of an unrelated address space while that process is concurrently tearing down and re-populating them is exactly the unsynchronized page-table access the kernel elsewhere prevents with tlb_remove_table_sync_one(), and it readily produces inconsistent refcount/mapcount state, VM_WARN/BUG trips, and oops in mm paths. The race can be re-armed in a loop by an unprivileged process."

Remote packets alone cannot establish the required qdisc hierarchy.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls every precondition — the qdisc/class topology, the child qdisc that re-enters `qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog()`, the packet, and the class deletion — and the sibling commit ships a deterministic shell reproducer. This is a reentrancy/accounting bug, not a race the attacker must win.
PR:L - `tc` qdisc/class operations are gated by `netlink_net_capable(skb, CAP_NET_ADMIN)`, which resolves to `netlink_ns_capable(skb, sock_net(sk)->user_ns, ...)` — namespace-relative, so an unprivileged user obtains it with `unshare -Urn` and can build the full hierarchy on `lo` inside that netns.
UI:N - The attacker performs the qdisc setup, packet transmission, and class deletion entirely on their own; no victim action or cooperation is needed.
S:U - The corruption is confined to kernel memory within the same security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed.
C:H - Dangling `hfsc_class` rb_nodes left in `q->eligible`/`vt_tree` are dereferenced by `eltree_get_mindl()`/`vttree_get_minvt()` after `kfree()`, giving a use-after-free read over reclaimed heap contents the attacker can spray, enabling arbitrary kernel memory disclosure.
I:H - Double `rb_erase()` on a stale node writes through an attacker-influenceable parent pointer, and subsequent `eltree_update()`/`rb_insert` operate on freed memory — yielding a write primitive; the same HFSC rbtree-corruption primitive has a public working local privilege escalation (CVE-2025-38001, "rbtree family drama").
A:H - Red-black tree corruption and use-after-free on freed `hfsc_class` objects reliably produce oopses, KASAN splats, and kernel panics, taking the system down."
