CERTFR-2024-AVI-0924
Vulnerability from certfr_avis - Published: 2024-10-25 - Updated: 2024-10-25
AV:L - The vulnerable code is reached only through the NETLINK_NETFILTER socket (`nfnetlink_rcv_batch` → `nf_tables_newsetelem`/`delsetelem` → set backend `.insert`/`.deactivate`/sync GC), which requires a local process on the system. Per kernel scoring guidance, netfilter/nftables netlink control-plane bugs are Local.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the timing window: `NFTA_SET_ELEM_TIMEOUT`/`NFTA_SET_ELEM_EXPIRATION` set the expiry instant at millisecond granularity, and the length of the netlink batch determines how long the transaction runs under `commit_mutex`, so the element can be made to flip to expired at a chosen point mid-transaction with no reliance on uncontrolled conditions.
PR:L - `nfnetlink` only requires `netlink_net_capable(skb, CAP_NET_ADMIN)`, which is `ns_capable` against the user namespace owning the netns, so an unprivileged user obtains it with `unshare -Urn`. No real root in the init namespace is needed.
UI:N - The attacker performs every step from their own process — create the set, add the timed element, submit the batch — with no victim action of any kind.
S:U - The corruption is of kernel heap objects and results in privilege escalation within the same kernel security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or hypervisor boundary is crossed.
C:H - The double-free/use-after-free on `nft_rhash_elem`/`nft_rbtree_elem`/`nft_pipapo_elem` lets the attacker reclaim the freed slab chunk with a chosen object and read it back via `NFT_MSG_GETSETELEM` dumps and element counter/quota expressions, yielding an arbitrary kernel-memory read primitive; the `use`-counter underflow additionally exposes freed `nft_chain`/`nft_object` contents.
I:H - The abort path writes into the freed element (`nft_setelem_data_activate()` + `ops->activate()` incrementing refcounts through a dangling pointer) and the duplicate-key/double-free conditions give a controllable heap write primitive suitable for control-flow hijacking and root privilege escalation; the dangling-interval side effect also silently alters firewall verdicts.
A:H - Even without successful exploitation, the double free and the `nft_use_dec` refcount underflow reliably trigger kernel oops/panic (slab corruption, `refcount_t` warnings, freeing a chain still referenced by the packet path), crashing the system.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

netem: fix return value if duplicate enqueue fails

There is a bug in netem_enqueue() introduced by
commit 5845f706388a ("net: netem: fix skb length BUG_ON in __skb_to_sgvec")
that can lead to a use-after-free.

This commit made netem_enqueue() always return NET_XMIT_SUCCESS
when a packet is duplicated, which can cause the parent qdisc's q.qlen
to be mistakenly incremented. When this happens qlen_notify() may be
skipped on the parent during destruction, leaving a dangling pointer
for some classful qdiscs like DRR.

There are two ways for the bug happen:

- If the duplicated packet is dropped by rootq->enqueue() and then
the original packet is also dropped.
- If rootq->enqueue() sends the duplicated packet to a different qdisc
and the original packet is dropped.

In both cases NET_XMIT_SUCCESS is returned even though no packets
are enqueued at the netem qdisc.

The fix is to defer the enqueue of the duplicate packet until after
the original packet has been guaranteed to return NET_XMIT_SUCCESS.
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached by configuring a DRR/netem qdisc hierarchy via rtnetlink (RTM_NEWQDISC/RTM_NEWTCLASS) and locally transmitting packets through it. This requires local system access, matching the tc/netlink qdisc guidance.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls both trigger conditions — netem's `duplicate` probability (settable to 100%) and its `limit` — so the bogus NET_XMIT_SUCCESS is produced deterministically on every enqueue, with no race to win and no reliance on state outside the attacker's control.
PR:L - Qdisc and class configuration requires CAP_NET_ADMIN, but the check is `netlink_net_capable()` against the netns owner user_ns, so any unprivileged user obtains it inside `unshare -Urn` along with a dummy/veth device to attach the qdiscs to.
UI:N - The attacker performs every step — qdisc setup, packet transmission, class deletion, and the subsequent dequeue that touches freed memory — with no victim action required.
S:U - The corruption occurs in kernel heap memory within the same host security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed.
C:H - The freed `struct drr_class` remains linked in `q->active` and is dereferenced on dequeue (`cl->qdisc->ops->peek`, `cl->deficit`), so reclaiming the slab object lets the attacker read arbitrary kernel memory through the attacker-controlled `cl->qdisc` pointer.
I:H - The use-after-free yields a write primitive via `list_del`/`list_move_tail` into the freed object and a controlled function-pointer call through `cl->qdisc->ops->peek`, which is sufficient for control-flow hijack and privilege escalation.
A:H - Even without successful exploitation the dangling `drr_class` pointer causes an oops/panic on the next dequeue, and the desynchronized parent q.qlen corrupts scheduler state, reliably crashing the kernel."

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
