In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/smc: fix double-free of smc_spd_priv when tee() duplicates splice pipe buffer

smc_rx_splice() allocates one smc_spd_priv per pipe_buffer and stores
the pointer in pipe_buffer.private. The pipe_buf_operations for these
buffers used .get = generic_pipe_buf_get, which only increments the page
reference count when tee(2) duplicates a pipe buffer. The smc_spd_priv
pointer itself was not handled, so after tee() both the original and the
cloned pipe_buffer share the same smc_spd_priv *.

When both pipes are subsequently released, smc_rx_pipe_buf_release() is
called twice against the same object:

1st call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [correct]
2nd call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [UAF]

KASAN reports a slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release(), which
then escalates to a NULL-pointer dereference and kernel panic via
smc_rx_update_consumer() when it chases the freed priv->smc pointer:

BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
Read of size 8 at addr ffff888004a45740 by task smc_splice_tee_/74
Call Trace:
<TASK>
dump_stack_lvl+0x53/0x70
print_report+0xce/0x650
kasan_report+0xc6/0x100
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>

BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000020
RIP: 0010:smc_rx_update_consumer+0x8d/0x350
Call Trace:
<TASK>
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x121/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>
Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception

Beyond the memory-safety problem, duplicating an SMC splice buffer is
semantically questionable: smc_rx_update_cons() would advance the
consumer cursor twice for the same data, corrupting receive-window
accounting. A refcount on smc_spd_priv could fix the double-free, but
the cursor-accounting issue would still need to be addressed separately.

The .get callback is invoked by both tee(2) and splice_pipe_to_pipe()
for partial transfers; both will now return -EFAULT. Users who need
to duplicate SMC socket data must use a copy-based read path.
AV:L - The vulnerable path requires a local process to create or use an established non-fallback SMC socket, splice data from it into a pipe, and then duplicate that pipe buffer with tee(2) or partial pipe-to-pipe splice. A remote SMC peer can supply data, but cannot by itself invoke the required local splice/tee pipe-buffer operations.
AC:L - There is no race or fragile timing requirement; once SMC data is available, the attacker-controlled syscall sequence deterministically creates two pipe buffers sharing the same smc_spd_priv. SMC-capable hardware/configuration is an affected deployment condition, not an exploitation race.
PR:L - Creating SMC stream sockets and invoking splice(2), tee(2), pipe(2), and close(2) do not require CAP_NET_ADMIN or other elevated privileges. The attacker needs only basic local code execution.
UI:N - No victim action is needed once the attacker has local execution; the attacker can perform the full syscall sequence and close both pipes. Any remote peer data needed for the SMC receive buffer can be generated by attacker-controlled endpoints in a plausible deployment.
S:U - The vulnerability corrupts kernel memory in the same operating-system security authority as the vulnerable SMC/socket/pipe code. It is a standard kernel memory corruption issue, not a VM escape or cross-authority boundary bypass.
C:H - The bug is a use-after-free/double-free of a heap object containing a kernel pointer and length, and the freed object is dereferenced on the second pipe-buffer release. Following kernel CVSS guidance, this memory corruption can support information disclosure primitives.
I:H - The duplicate release can lead to allocator corruption and attacker-influenced dereferences through the freed smc_spd_priv contents. Following kernel CVSS guidance for UAF/double-free memory corruption, arbitrary write or control-flow compromise is a defensible impact.
A:H - The reported failure includes KASAN slab-use-after-free followed by NULL pointer dereference and kernel panic in smc_rx_update_consumer(). Even without full exploitation, the sequence can crash the kernel.

1st call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [correct]
2nd call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [UAF]

KASAN reports a slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release(), which
then escalates to a NULL-pointer dereference and kernel panic via
smc_rx_update_consumer() when it chases the freed priv->smc pointer:

BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
Read of size 8 at addr ffff888004a45740 by task smc_splice_tee_/74
Call Trace:
<TASK>
dump_stack_lvl+0x53/0x70
print_report+0xce/0x650
kasan_report+0xc6/0x100
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>

BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000020
RIP: 0010:smc_rx_update_consumer+0x8d/0x350
Call Trace:
<TASK>
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x121/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>

1st call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [correct]
2nd call: kfree(priv) sock_put(sk) smc_rx_update_cons() [UAF]

KASAN reports a slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release(), which
then escalates to a NULL-pointer dereference and kernel panic via
smc_rx_update_consumer() when it chases the freed priv->smc pointer:

BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
Read of size 8 at addr ffff888004a45740 by task smc_splice_tee_/74
Call Trace:
<TASK>
dump_stack_lvl+0x53/0x70
print_report+0xce/0x650
kasan_report+0xc6/0x100
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x78/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>

BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000020
RIP: 0010:smc_rx_update_consumer+0x8d/0x350
Call Trace:
<TASK>
smc_rx_pipe_buf_release+0x121/0x2a0
free_pipe_info+0xd4/0x130
pipe_release+0x142/0x160
__fput+0x1c6/0x490
__x64_sys_close+0x4f/0x90
do_syscall_64+0xa6/0x1a0
entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f
</TASK>

Even without full exploitation, the sequence can crash the kernel."

Sightings and recorded dates, grouped by day · UTC
How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.
