Title
vxlan: Fix NPD when refreshing an FDB entry with a nexthop object
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
vxlan: Fix NPD when refreshing an FDB entry with a nexthop object
VXLAN FDB entries can point to either a remote destination or an FDB
nexthop group. The latter is usually used in EVPN deployments where
learning is disabled.
However, when learning is enabled, an incoming packet might try to
refresh an FDB entry that points to an FDB nexthop group and therefore
does not have a remote. Such packets should be dropped, but they are
only dropped after dereferencing the non-existent remote, resulting in a
NPD [1] which can be reproduced using [2].
Fix by dropping such packets earlier. Remove the misleading comment from
first_remote_rcu().
AV:N - `vxlan_rcv` is the UDP tunnel `encap_rcv` handler, so a single crafted VXLAN datagram sent to the VTEP's UDP port from anywhere routable reaches `vxlan_set_mac` → `vxlan_snoop` with a fully attacker-chosen inner source MAC. VXLAN underlays are L3-routed, so the attacker is not confined to the local segment.
AC:L - One unsolicited packet whose inner source MAC matches an nh-backed FDB entry triggers the NULL dereference deterministically — no race, no memory-layout grooming, no timing window. Learning is the kernel default for new VXLAN devices and nexthop-backed FDB entries are standard EVPN programming, so the required state is ordinary deployment configuration rather than a condition outside the attacker's control.
PR:N - VXLAN carries no authentication and `vxlan_rcv` performs no source-address or peer validation before handing the inner frame to `vxlan_snoop`. An entirely unauthenticated off-box attacker needs no credentials or account on the target.
UI:N - The crash happens during packet receive processing with no involvement from any local user or administrator. No victim action of any kind is required.
S:U - The fault occurs in the kernel and its impact is confined to that same kernel's security authority. No VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:N - The dereference is a read of `remote_ip` at offset 0 (and `remote_ifindex` nearby) from a NULL pointer, well inside the unmapped guard page, so no data is read or returned to the attacker. Nothing is disclosed before the fault aborts execution.
I:N - Execution faults at the read in `vxlan_addr_equal()`, before the `rdst->remote_ip = *src_ip` assignment, so no write or state modification ever occurs. This is a pure NULL-pointer read with no corruption or control-flow primitive.
A:H - The NULL dereference oopses in softirq/NAPI context, which takes the `in_interrupt()` path in `die()` and panics the machine ("Fatal exception in interrupt") rather than merely killing a task. A remote attacker can repeat the single triggering packet at will for a persistent whole-system denial of service.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
