Title
bpf, sockmap: Several fixes to bpf_msg_pop_data
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
bpf, sockmap: Several fixes to bpf_msg_pop_data
Several fixes to bpf_msg_pop_data,
1. In sk_msg_shift_left, we should put_page
2. if (len == 0), return early is better
3. pop the entire sk_msg (last == msg->sg.size) should be supported
4. Fix for the value of variable "a"
5. In sk_msg_shift_left, after shifting, i has already pointed to the next
element. Addtional sk_msg_iter_var_next may result in BUG.
AV:L - The vulnerable helper runs from `sk_psock_msg_verdict()` on the local egress path, requiring a locally loaded BPF_PROG_TYPE_SK_MSG program attached to a sockmap plus a local `sendmsg()` on a sockmap'd socket; there is no remote packet path into `bpf_msg_pop_data()` since SK_MSG programs only process data the local host is sending.
AC:L - The bug is fully deterministic and entirely attacker-controlled — the sender chooses the write size that splits the message across scatterlist elements (making `offset != 0`), and the BPF program chooses a `start` that lands in a later element, so `a = start` is guaranteed to exceed `sge->length` with no race, timing, or memory-layout dependency.
PR:L - Setting up the sockmap and SK_MSG program requires CAP_BPF and CAP_NET_ADMIN, but `bpf_token_capable()` grants these at `ns_capable()` level inside a user namespace via delegated BPF tokens, and both capabilities are routinely handed to container workloads, so an ordinary unprivileged-in-init-ns user can reach this path.
UI:N - No victim action is required — the attacker loads the SK_MSG program and issues the triggering `sendmsg()` entirely on their own, with no file to open, filesystem to mount, or third party to interact with.
S:U - The out-of-bounds reads, heap overflow, and scatterlist-ring corruption are all confined to the kernel's own memory and the socket's psock state; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The corrupted scatterlist entry carries an inflated `length` (up to ~4 GB after the signed-to-unsigned wrap of `b`) and an `offset` past the page, and `tcp_bpf_push()` hands those verbatim to `tcp_sendmsg_locked()` with MSG_SPLICE_PAGES, transmitting arbitrary adjacent kernel heap memory to the socket peer; the `!space` path additionally performs `memcpy(to, from, a)` reading far past the source element.
I:H - In the no-space branch `memcpy(to, from, a)` and `memcpy(to + a, from + a + pop, b)` write attacker-sized data past an undersized `alloc_pages()` allocation — a controlled heap buffer overflow — and the missing `put_page()` plus the stray `sk_msg_iter_var_next()` rotate the entire sg ring, installing stale `struct page *` values that produce refcount imbalance and use-after-free of pages.
A:H - A negative `b` passed to `memcpy()` as `size_t`, a scatterlist entry pointing far outside its page, and `sk_msg_shift_left()` corrupting the whole fragment ring all lead directly to kernel oops/panic, while the missing `put_page()` permanently leaks a page per popped element.
A:H - A negative `b` passed to `memcpy()` as `size_t`, a scatterlist entry pointing far outside its page, and `sk_msg_shift_left()` corrupting the whole fragment ring all lead directly to kernel oops/panic, while the missing `put_page()` permanently leaks a page per popped element."

Experimental. This forecast is provided for visualization only and may change without notice. Do not use it for operational decisions.
Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
