Title
tracing/probes: Fix MAX_TRACE_ARGS limit handling
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing/probes: Fix MAX_TRACE_ARGS limit handling When creating a trace_probe we would set nr_args prior to truncating the arguments to MAX_TRACE_ARGS. However, we would only initialize arguments up to the limit. This caused invalid memory access when attempting to set up probes with more than 128 fetchargs. BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000020 #PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode #PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page PGD 0 P4D 0 Oops: Oops: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP PTI CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 1769 Comm: cat Not tainted 6.11.0-rc7+ #8 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.16.3-1.fc39 04/01/2014 RIP: 0010:__set_print_fmt+0x134/0x330 Resolve the issue by applying the MAX_TRACE_ARGS limit earlier. Return an error when there are too many arguments instead of silently truncating.
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached only by writing a probe definition to tracefs files (/sys/kernel/tracing/kprobe_events, uprobe_events, or dynamic_events) via the write() syscall. There is no remote or network-facing path to __trace_kprobe_create()/__trace_uprobe_create().
AC:L - A single write() containing more than 128 fetchargs deterministically triggers the NULL dereference in __set_print_fmt() — no race, no memory-layout dependency, and the 4096-byte WRITE_BUFSIZE line limit easily accommodates 129+ arguments.
PR:L - No capable()/CAP_SYS_ADMIN check exists anywhere in the tracefs or dynamic-event path; access is gated purely by file permissions, which distros, Android/ChromeOS-style tracing groups, and container/debug setups routinely relax for non-root tracing users. Consistent with prior kernel CNA scoring of tracefs-write-triggered tracing bugs as PR:L.
UI:N - The attacker performs the entire operation themselves with one write() to the tracefs event file; no victim action, mount, or file open by another user is needed.
S:U - The uninitialized-argument dereference and its consequences are entirely within the kernel's own security authority — no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The code treats a zeroed, never-initialized struct probe_arg as valid and chases its pointers (parg->type->fmt, ->is_string, ->print), so on configurations where low addresses are mappable (mmap_min_addr=0, common on embedded and legacy deployments) the attacker controls the fetch_type and turns snprintf("%s", parg->type->fmt) into an arbitrary kernel-memory read whose output is then exposed through the event's format file.
I:H - __set_print_fmt() runs twice — once to size the kmalloc buffer and once to fill it — so an attacker-controlled type structure yielding different lengths between passes gives a controlled heap buffer overflow, and the same uninitialized-pointer dereference reaches an indirect call through parg->type->print in trace_probe_print_args().
A:H - The immediate result is a kernel oops (NULL read at 0x20 in __set_print_fmt), and when triggered through dynamic_events the faulting task dies while holding dyn_event_ops_mutex, permanently deadlocking all further dynamic-event operations until reboot; with panic_on_oops set it is a full system panic."

Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
