Title
smb: client: fix double put of @cfile in smb2_set_path_size()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
smb: client: fix double put of @cfile in smb2_set_path_size()
If smb2_compound_op() is called with a valid @cfile and returned
-EINVAL, we need to call cifs_get_writable_path() before retrying it
as the reference of @cfile was already dropped by previous call.
This fixes the following KASAN splat when running fstests generic/013
against Windows Server 2022:
CIFS: Attempting to mount //w22-fs0/scratch
run fstests generic/013 at 2024-09-02 19:48:59
AV:N - The retry path is entered solely on the SMB server's `STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER` response to the compound SET_INFO(end-of-file), so a malicious or MITM SMB server on the connection deterministically drives the double put using only data it sends over TCP/445. The cifs client processing a remote peer's response is network-reachable code.
AC:L - The server chooses the NT status byte-for-byte, so `map_smb2_to_linux_error()` yields -EINVAL on every attempt with no race, timing, or memory-layout precondition; the required non-NULL `cfile` is guaranteed by holding the file open for write (or by cifs deferred-close), and the sequence can be repeated indefinitely to groom the freed slab slot.
PR:N - The attacking SMB server needs no credentials or privileges on the victim client — it merely answers a request the client already sent. On the alternate local path a plain unprivileged user with write access to a file on the mount reaches it via truncate(2), so no elevated privilege is required in either scenario.
UI:N - On an already-mounted share no victim action is needed: ordinary write-back/setattr traffic reaches SMB2_OP_SET_EOF, and a local unprivileged attacker issues truncate(2) themselves against a real server (Windows Server 2022 returns the triggering status, per the fstests generic/013 reproducer). The mount is standing configuration, not a step of the exploit.
S:U - The corruption is confined to kernel slab memory managed by the same kernel security authority as the cifs client; no hypervisor, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The retry dereferences the already-released `cifsFileInfo` and sends `fid.persistent_fid`/`volatile_fid` read out of the freed slab object to the remote server, directly leaking reclaimed kernel heap contents to the attacker; the resulting use-after-free on a groomable kmalloc object additionally yields a general kernel-memory read primitive.
I:H - KASAN confirms an 8-byte slab-use-after-free write (`detach_if_pending` on the freed `deferred_close_work` timer), and the extra `_cifsFileInfo_put()` performs `--count` plus `list_del()` on freed memory — attacker-sprayed contents turn these into controlled writes, the classic path to control-flow hijack and privilege escalation.
A:H - The refcount underflow frees a `cifsFileInfo` still referenced by `struct file->private_data`, the tcon/inode open-file lists, the oplock-break work and the deferred-close timer, producing reliable oopses/panics from list and timer corruption; the KASAN splat in the commit shows the crash in the cifsoplockd workqueue."

Drag nodes to arrange them. Double-click a related vulnerability to open it, or a source to visit its link. The Physics button on the left tunes the layout and the simulation; the legend at the bottom left hides or shows nodes by kind and by sighting type.
Experimental. This forecast is provided for visualization only and may change without notice. Do not use it for operational decisions.
Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
