Title
netfilter: validate user input for expected length
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
netfilter: validate user input for expected length
I got multiple syzbot reports showing old bugs exposed
by BPF after commit 20f2505fb436 ("bpf: Try to avoid kzalloc
in cgroup/{s,g}etsockopt")
setsockopt() @optlen argument should be taken into account
before copying data.
en
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached only through the local `setsockopt(2)` syscall on an IP/bridge socket (SOL_IP netfilter option range → `nf_setsockopt` → `do_ipt_set_ctl`/`do_ebt_set_ctl`). No remote or adjacent-network packet can reach this code.
AC:L - There is no race and no dependence on state the attacker cannot influence — the attacker picks `optlen`, which directly determines the size of the `kmalloc()`'d kernel_optval buffer, so the 96-byte over-read past that object is deterministic and the adjacent slab contents can be groomed by ordinary heap spraying. The one environmental precondition (a cgroup/setsockopt BPF program attached, standard in container/cloud and Android deployments where CONFIG_CGROUP_BPF is on by default) is a vulnerable-configuration property, not a per-attempt condition.
PR:L - Both entry points check only `ns_capable(sock_net(sk)->user_ns, CAP_NET_ADMIN)`, which any unprivileged user obtains inside a user+network namespace (`unshare -Urn`); no real root in the initial namespace is needed.
UI:N - The attacker triggers the out-of-bounds read entirely from their own process by issuing a single short-`optlen` setsockopt call; no victim action is involved.
S:U - The over-read and its consequences stay inside the kernel's own memory and the calling task's network namespace; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - Up to 96 bytes (116 for `ebt_replace`) of adjacent kernel slab memory are read past a 1–64-byte kmalloc object, and the leaked `tmp.size` then drives a second unbounded `copy_from_sockptr_offset()` of up to `XT_MAX_TABLE_SIZE` (512 MB) from the same object into a table buffer — far from a strictly bounded few-byte read, exposing arbitrary heap contents including pointers.
I:N - The defect is purely an out-of-bounds read; the destination of the large follow-on copy is allocated with the same `tmp.size`, so no memory is written out of bounds, and `tmp.counters` is only consumed by `copy_to_user()`, which rejects kernel addresses.
A:H - The KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report panics hardened/`panic_on_warn` kernels, and on production kernels the heap-garbage-derived `tmp.size` causes a multi-hundred-megabyte `kvmalloc` plus a memcpy that walks off the slab into unmapped direct-map memory, producing an oops/panic and memory exhaustion."

A:H - The KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report panics hardened/`panic_on_warn` kernels, and on production kernels the heap-garbage-derived `tmp.size` causes a multi-hundred-megabyte `kvmalloc` plus a memcpy that walks off the slab into unmapped direct-map memory, producing an oops/panic and memory exhaustion."}]}], "affected": [{"repo": "https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git", "vendor": "Linux", "product": "Linux", "versions": [{"status": The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
