Title
fs: dlm: fix use after free in midcomms commit
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
fs: dlm: fix use after free in midcomms commit
While working on processing dlm message in softirq context I experienced
the following KASAN use-after-free warning:
AV:N - The object is freed by a `DLM_ACK` message received from a remote peer over the DLM lowcomms transport (routable TCP/SCTP port 21064), and the acked sequence number is taken directly from the wire with no validation. Processing of remote peer data is what triggers the free, so this is network-reachable.
AC:L - The attacker fully controls the freeing side and can spam arbitrary-sequence `DLM_ACK` packets continuously to free every in-flight mhandle, retrying indefinitely against a victim node with constant DLM lock traffic. The race window spans the whole `dlm_midcomms_get_mhandle()`→`dlm_midcomms_commit_mhandle()` message-construction path, and the attacker can also drive load to induce the needed preemption.
PR:N - DLM in the affected versions has no authentication or TLS; the only gate is that the source address matches a configured cluster node, which is a network-topology restriction rather than a credential. A peer, compromised cluster node, or spoofing attacker needs no account or privilege on the target.
UI:N - No victim action is required; the crafted ACK is processed automatically by the DLM receive workqueue on a running cluster node.
S:U - The corruption is confined to kernel memory within the same security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The use-after-free reads `mh->node`, `mh->opts`, `mh->msg`, and `mh->idx` out of a freed, mergeable-cache slab object, letting an attacker who grooms the slot control pointers that are subsequently dereferenced, yielding an arbitrary-read primitive.
I:H - The stale handle is written through (`mh->opts->o_nextcmd = ...` via a pointer read from freed memory, plus `mh->committed = true`), and `srcu_read_unlock()` performs `this_cpu_inc(srcu_unlock_count[idx])` with an out-of-range index — both give out-of-bounds/arbitrary write primitives exploitable for control-flow hijack.
A:H - A use-after-free plus corrupted SRCU counters reliably produce KASAN splats, WARNs, oopses, and either premature grace periods (cascading UAFs) or never-completing SRCU grace periods that hang DLM and the cluster filesystem."

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
