In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

netfilter: nft_set_pipapo: do not free live element

Pablo reports a crash with large batches of elements with a
back-to-back add/remove pattern. Quoting Pablo:

add_elem("00000000") timeout 100 ms
...
add_elem("0000000X") timeout 100 ms
del_elem("0000000X") <---------------- delete one that was just added
...
add_elem("00005000") timeout 100 ms

1) nft_pipapo_remove() removes element 0000000X
Then, KASAN shows a splat.

Looking at the remove function there is a chance that we will drop a
rule that maps to a non-deactivated element.

Removal happens in two steps, first we do a lookup for key k and return the
to-be-removed element and mark it as inactive in the next generation.
Then, in a second step, the element gets removed from the set/map.

The _remove function does not work correctly if we have more than one
element that share the same key.

This can happen if we insert an element into a set when the set already
holds an element with same key, but the element mapping to the existing
key has timed out or is not active in the next generation.

In such case its possible that removal will unmap the wrong element.
If this happens, we will leak the non-deactivated element, it becomes
unreachable.

The element that got deactivated (and will be freed later) will
remain reachable in the set data structure, this can result in
a crash when such an element is retrieved during lookup (stale
pointer).

Add a check that the fully matching key does in fact map to the element
that we have marked as inactive in the deactivation step.
If not, we need to continue searching.

Add a bug/warn trap at the end of the function as well, the remove
function must not ever be called with an invisible/unreachable/non-existent
element.

v2: avoid uneeded temporary variable (Stefano)
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached exclusively through the nfnetlink NFNL_SUBSYS_NFTABLES socket interface, which requires local system access to issue set-element transactions. The subsequent UAF dereference happens on the packet path, but the attacker must first be local to build the poisoned set.
AC:L - No race or memory-layout luck is needed to create the dangling pointer — a single deterministic batch ("add key K with timeout, add K again, delete K") reliably makes nft_pipapo_remove() unmap the wrong element, and pipapo is unconditionally compiled into nf_tables so no unusual config is required.
PR:L - nf_tables gates on netlink_net_capable(skb, CAP_NET_ADMIN), which is evaluated against the netns owner's user namespace, so an unprivileged user obtains it via `unshare -Urn`. The same namespace also lets the attacker send the packets that dereference the freed element, making the whole chain self-contained for an ordinary local user.
UI:N - The attacker performs every step — creating the set, driving the add/delete batch, and generating the traffic that hits the stale mapping entry. No victim action is involved.
S:U - The corruption is confined to the kernel's own heap and results in standard kernel privilege escalation rather than crossing a hypervisor, IOMMU, or other separate security authority.
C:H - The freed nft_pipapo_elem stays reachable from the packet lookup path, and nft_lookup_eval() copies nft_set_ext_data() from that freed object into registers, giving an attacker-observable read of reclaimed kernel heap that can be sprayed with sensitive data or kernel pointers.
I:H - This is a use-after-free on an object whose contents the attacker can control via heap spraying; for verdict maps the freed verdict.chain pointer is followed by nft_do_chain(), and nft_set_elem_update_expr() executes stateful expressions out of the freed memory, yielding write and control-flow-hijack primitives.
A:H - Even without full exploitation, the dangling f->mt[b].e pointer is dereferenced on every matching packet, producing KASAN splats, oopses, and kernel panics (the reported symptom was a crash).
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

KVM: Always flush async #PF workqueue when vCPU is being destroyed

Always flush the per-vCPU async #PF workqueue when a vCPU is clearing its
completion queue, e.g. when a VM and all its vCPUs is being destroyed.
KVM must ensure that none of its workqueue callbacks is running when the
last reference to the KVM _module_ is put. Gifting a reference to the
associated VM prevents the workqueue callback from dereferencing freed
vCPU/VM memory, but does not prevent the KVM module from being unloaded
before the callback completes.

Drop the misguided VM refcount gifting, as calling kvm_put_kvm() from
async_pf_execute() if kvm_put_kvm() flushes the async #PF workqueue will
result in deadlock. async_pf_execute() can't return until kvm_put_kvm()
finishes, and kvm_put_kvm() can't return until async_pf_execute() finishes:

WARNING: CPU: 8 PID: 251 at virt/kvm/kvm_main.c:1435 kvm_put_kvm+0x2d/0x320 [kvm]
Modules linked in: vhost_net vhost vhost_iotlb tap kvm_intel kvm irqbypass
CPU: 8 PID: 251 Comm: kworker/8:1 Tainted: G W 6.6.0-rc1-e7af8d17224a-x86/gmem-vm #119
Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (Q35 + ICH9, 2009), BIOS 0.0.0 02/06/2015
Workqueue: events async_pf_execute [kvm]
RIP: 0010:kvm_put_kvm+0x2d/0x320 [kvm]
Call Trace:
<TASK>
async_pf_execute+0x198/0x260 [kvm]
process_one_work+0x145/0x2d0
worker_thread+0x27e/0x3a0
kthread+0xba/0xe0
ret_from_fork+0x2d/0x50
ret_from_fork_asm+0x11/0x20
</TASK>
---[ end trace 0000000000000000 ]---
INFO: task kworker/8:1:251 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Tainted: G W 6.6.0-rc1-e7af8d17224a-x86/gmem-vm #119
"echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
task:kworker/8:1 state:D stack:0 pid:251 ppid:2 flags:0x00004000
Workqueue: events async_pf_execute [kvm]
Call Trace:
<TASK>
__schedule+0x33f/0xa40
schedule+0x53/0xc0
schedule_timeout+0x12a/0x140
__wait_for_common+0x8d/0x1d0
__flush_work.isra.0+0x19f/0x2c0
kvm_clear_async_pf_completion_queue+0x129/0x190 [kvm]
kvm_arch_destroy_vm+0x78/0x1b0 [kvm]
kvm_put_kvm+0x1c1/0x320 [kvm]
async_pf_execute+0x198/0x260 [kvm]
process_one_work+0x145/0x2d0
worker_thread+0x27e/0x3a0
kthread+0xba/0xe0
ret_from_fork+0x2d/0x50
ret_from_fork_asm+0x11/0x20
</TASK>

If kvm_clear_async_pf_completion_queue() actually flushes the workqueue,
then there's no need to gift async_pf_execute() a reference because all
invocations of async_pf_execute() will be forced to complete before the
vCPU and its VM are destroyed/freed. And that in turn fixes the module
unloading bug as __fput() won't do module_put() on the last vCPU reference
until the vCPU has been freed, e.g. if closing the vCPU file also puts the
last reference to the KVM module.

Note that kvm_check_async_pf_completion() may also take the work item off
the completion queue and so also needs to flush the work queue, as the
work will not be seen by kvm_clear_async_pf_completion_queue(). Waiting
on the workqueue could theoretically delay a vCPU due to waiting for the
work to complete, but that's a very, very small chance, and likely a very
small delay. kvm_arch_async_page_present_queued() unconditionally makes a
new request, i.e. will effectively delay entering the guest, so the
remaining work is really just:

trace_kvm_async_pf_completed(addr, cr2_or_gpa);

__kvm_vcpu_wake_up(vcpu);

mmput(mm);

and mmput() can't drop the last reference to the page tables if the vCPU is
still alive, i.e. the vCPU won't get stuck tearing down page tables.

Add a helper to do the flushing, specifically to deal with "wakeup all"
work items, as they aren't actually work items, i.e. are never placed in a
workqueue. Trying to flush a bogus workqueue entry rightly makes
__flush_work() complain (kudos to whoever added that sanity check).

Note, commit 5f6de5cbebee ("KVM: Prevent module exit until al
---truncated---
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached exclusively through `/dev/kvm` ioctls (`KVM_CREATE_VM`/`KVM_CREATE_VCPU`/`KVM_SET_USER_MEMORY_REGION`/`KVM _RUN`) plus `close()` of the vCPU fd, all of which require an account on the host; there is no network, adjacent-network, or remote-peer data path into `virt/kvm/async_pf.c`.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the window — `madvise(MADV_PAGEOUT)` on its own guest memslot guarantees `__gfn_to_pfn_memslot()` returns async, queueing up to `ASYNC_PF_PER_VCPU` (64) work items per vCPU that each sleep in `get_user_pages_remote()` for the whole swap-in latency, while `close()` of the vCPU fd drives `__fput()`→`module_put()` at a moment of the attacker's choosing. Nothing depends on a memory layout or system state the attacker cannot influence, and the flaw is unconditional on x86 since `CONFIG_KVM_ASYNC_PF` is `select`ed by `CONFIG_KVM`.
PR:L - No capability check exists anywhere on the path — `kvm_dev_ioctl(KVM_CREATE_VM)`, `kvm_setup_async_pf()`, and vCPU teardown are all reachable by any user holding an open `/dev/kvm`, which distros grant to the ordinary `kvm` group and container/CI images commonly expose world-writable. The entire unsafe state that constitutes the bug — KVM module code still executing after the last `module_put()` — is created with zero privileges, so PR:L is selected as the higher-severity option over PR:H.
UI:N - No victim action such as mounting a filesystem, opening a device, or plugging in hardware is required; `kvm_clear_async_pf_completion_queue()` and the premature `module_put()` run automatically from `__fput()`/`kvm_destroy_vm()` when the attacker's own process exits.
S:U - The stale work callback and the freed module text/`async_pf_cache` slab are both host-kernel resources, so the flaw and its impact stay within a single security authority — this is a host-internal module-lifetime bug, not a guest-to-host or IOMMU boundary escape.
C:H - This is a use-after-free in which `process_one_work()` dispatches `worker->current_func()` into a freed vmalloc module region and `async_pf_execute()` continues touching `struct kvm_async_pf` after `kmem_cache_destroy()` has released the slab; controlling the reallocated module-alloc/vmalloc contents yields kernel-mode execution and thus arbitrary kernel memory disclosure.
I:H - The stale callback writes through the freed object (`list_add_tail(&apf->link, ...)`, `apf->vcpu = NULL`) into slab pages already returned to the allocator and reissued to other consumers, and executing a freed function pointer as kernel text is a direct control-flow hijack primitive — both are arbitrary-write class outcomes.
A:H - Jumping into unmapped or repurposed vmalloc memory produces an immediate oops/panic, `kmem_cache_destroy()` on the still-populated `async_pf_cache` corrupts allocator state, and the same path drives full `kvm_destroy_vm()` teardown from a shared `system_wq` worker, which the commit's own trace shows wedging a kworker for more than 120 seconds.
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached through the nfnetlink/nftables netlink socket (NFT_MSG_GETSETELEM dump raced against transaction commit/abort), which requires local system access. Per kernel scoring guidance, netfilter/nftables netlink paths are Local.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race — one thread issues repeated set-element dumps while another repeatedly commits/aborts transactions to flip the gencursor and free priv->clone — and can retry indefinitely; once the wrong branch is latched the free window spans the entire element walk.
PR:L - nfnetlink_rcv_msg() only requires CAP_NET_ADMIN via netlink_net_capable(), which an unprivileged user obtains in their own network namespace with `unshare -Urn`, where they can freely create pipapo sets and drive both the dump and the transaction.
UI:N - Exploitation is entirely driven by the attacker's own netlink threads; no action by any other user or administrator is needed.
S:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel memory within the same security authority, giving kernel-level compromise rather than crossing a hypervisor, IOMMU, or other scope boundary.
C:H - The walk reads element pointers and contents from freed memory and copies them straight into the netlink dump reply (nft_data_dump of key/data, plus nla_put of udata->len bytes at udata->data), giving a groomable arbitrary kernel-memory read exfiltrated directly to userspace.
I:H - The element pointer `e` is taken from the freed mt array, so after heap reallocation the attacker controls it, and nf_tables_fill_expr_info() performs an indirect call via `expr->ops->dump()` on that object — a control-flow hijack primitive enabling privilege escalation.
A:H - Even without successful exploitation, dereferencing freed/reallocated pipapo match data and wild element pointers produces an oops or panic, and the race can be re-triggered at will to crash the kernel."

No network or physical component is involved.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race entirely within their own process — one thread issuing NVIF object NEW/DEL ioctls while another touches mmap'd VRAM BOs to drive `nouveau_ttm_io_mem_reserve()` → `nvkm_object_search()`; the three paths hold three different locks so no serialization exists. The race was hit unintentionally by a normal `deqp-vk` conformance run, confirming the window is trivially wide.
PR:L - Only an open file descriptor on the nouveau render node is required; nouveau advertises `DRIVER_RENDER` and `nouveau_drm_ioctl()` dispatches the NVIF ioctl before `drm_ioctl()`, so not even DRM_AUTH/DRM_MASTER is checked. Any local user with GPU access — a normal desktop session user, an Android app, or a container with the render node exposed — qualifies.
UI:N - The attacking process performs all steps itself: opening the render node, allocating and mmap'ing buffer objects, and spawning the racing threads. No victim action is needed.
S:U - Corruption is confined to kernel memory within the same security authority; this is a standard local kernel privilege-escalation surface with no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed.
C:H - A torn rb-tree traversal dereferences attacker-influenceable wild pointers (`rb_entry()` on garbage `node`), and a lookup that "succeeds" on a stale node returns a wrong/freed `nvkm_object` that `nvkm_ioctl_path()` then reads (`object->route`, `object->token`) and uses for `nvkm_ioctl_rd`, yielding arbitrary kernel-memory and MMIO disclosure.
I:H - Unserialized concurrent `rb_insert_color()`/`rb_erase()` rebalancing writes through pointers of a corrupted tree, and a bogus object returned to `nvkm_ioctl_path()` is dispatched via `object->func->mthd/wr32/map` — an indirect call through a function pointer in potentially freed memory, giving control-flow hijack and arbitrary write potential.
A:H - The reported failure is an immediately reproducible general protection fault on a non-canonical address in `nvkm_object_search()`, killing the task and leaving the GPU/kernel in an inconsistent state; it can be triggered repeatedly by any local user with render-node access."

Where original skb's skb->dev can be different to neigh's
neigh->dev. For instance in case of bridging dnated skb from one veth to
another, the skb would be added to a neigh->arp_queue of the bridge.

As skb->dev can be reset back to nf_bridge->physindev and used, and as
there is no explicit mechanism that prevents this physindev from been
freed under us (for instance neigh_flush_dev doesn't cleanup skbs from
different device's neigh queue) we can crash on e.g. this stack:

arp_process
neigh_update
skb = __skb_dequeue(&neigh->arp_queue)
neigh_resolve_output(..., skb)
...
br_nf_dev_xmit
br_nf_pre_routing_finish_bridge_slow
skb->dev = nf_bridge->physindev
br_handle_frame_finish

Let's use plain ifindex instead of net_device link. To peek into the
original net_device we will use dev_get_by_index_rcu(). Thus either we
get device and are safe to use it or we don't get it and drop skb."

Consistent with netfilter/bridge configuration paths being locally reachable.
AC:L - The attacker deterministically controls every step and their ordering — DNAT to an address with no neighbour entry, veth deletion, then the ARP reply that dequeues the skb — and can stretch the arp_queue residency window arbitrarily via the per-netns neigh sysctls (retrans_time_ms/mcast_solicit), giving ample time to reclaim the freed net_device.
PR:L - An unprivileged user gets CAP_NET_ADMIN in a new netns via `unshare -Urn`, and br_netfilter_sysctl_default() enables bridge-nf-call-iptables/ip6tables by default in every new netns, so no real privilege is needed to arm and reach the path.
UI:N - The attacker performs the entire sequence — topology setup, packet injection, device teardown, ARP reply — with no victim action required.
S:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel memory within the same security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or hypervisor boundary crossed.
C:H - Use-after-free on a struct net_device whose fields are re-read after free (dev->nd_net, dev->rx_handler_data), giving a reclaim-controlled pointer that is dereferenced — an arbitrary kernel read primitive once the allocation is sprayed.
I:H - The freed device's rx_handler_data is type-confused into a struct net_bridge_port and written through (br_fdb_update), and the attacker-controlled struct net * from dev_net() feeds NF_HOOK's function-pointer dispatch, enabling arbitrary write and control-flow hijack.
A:H - Dereferencing the freed net_device reliably oopses/panics the kernel, as observed in the reported production crash stack, and can be triggered repeatedly.
en
AV:L - The vulnerable code is reached through the nfnetlink/nftables netlink socket interface (NFT_MSG_NEWFLOWTABLE batch message), which requires local system access. Per kernel scoring guidance, netfilter/nftables netlink paths are Local.
AC:H - The attacker fully controls the reader side by spamming NFT_MSG_NEWFLOWTABLE, but the writer side is `nft_unregister_flowtable_type()`, reachable only from `nf_flow_inet_module_exit()` — i.e. an `rmmod` requiring real CAP_SYS_MODULE in the init namespace, which an unprivileged attacker cannot influence. Winning the window between latching `type` and `try_module_get(type->owner)` therefore depends on a privileged event outside attacker control.
PR:L - `nfnetlink_rcv()` checks `netlink_net_capable(skb, CAP_NET_ADMIN)`, which evaluates against `sock_net(sk)->user_ns`, so an unprivileged user obtains the needed capability with `unshare -Urn`. No real root is required on the attacker's side of the race.
UI:N - Exploitation requires only that the attacker issue netlink requests in a loop; no victim opens a file, mounts a filesystem, or otherwise participates. The concurrent administrative module unload is accounted for in Attack Complexity, not User Interaction.
S:U - The race, the dangling pointer, and its consequences are all confined to the kernel's own security authority. No VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The unprotected traversal yields a dangling `struct nf_flowtable_type *` into freed module memory, which is then dereferenced (`type->family`, `type->owner`) and chased into `struct module` inside `try_module_get()`. Per kernel guidance a use-after-free is scored High, since reclaimed memory contents become readable through the stale pointer.
I:H - `try_module_get()` performs `atomic_inc_not_zero(&module->refcnt)` through a pointer read from freed memory, and on success `nf_tables_newflowtable()` stores the stale `type` and invokes `type->init()` while `nft_flowtable_parse_hook()` installs `type->hook` as a live packet-processing callback — a control-flow hijack primitive if the module region is reclaimed. Use-after-free with function-pointer dereference is High integrity impact.
A:H - Module memory is released via `execmem_free()`, so dereferencing the stale `type` typically faults on unmapped kernel address space, producing an oops/panic. Any use-after-free of this kind is scored High availability impact.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dma-direct: Leak pages on dma_set_decrypted() failure

On TDX it is possible for the untrusted host to cause
set_memory_encrypted() or set_memory_decrypted() to fail such that an
error is returned and the resulting memory is shared. Callers need to
take care to handle these errors to avoid returning decrypted (shared)
memory to the page allocator, which could lead to functional or security
issues.

DMA could free decrypted/shared pages if dma_set_decrypted() fails. This
should be a rare case. Just leak the pages in this case instead of
freeing them.
AV:L - The attacker is the untrusted hypervisor/VMM, which reaches the vulnerable code through the local hypercall/VM-exit interface (`TDVMCALL_MAP_GPA`) rather than any network stack. This is a platform-local attack surface directly beneath the guest kernel, not a remote or network-adjacent one.
AC:L - The VMM deterministically controls the `TDVMCALL_MAP_GPA` return value and can fail it (or force three no-progress retries) at will, after the guest PTEs have already been flipped to the shared alias; it can also force repeated DMA allocations via device hotplug or guest I/O. No race, memory-layout grooming, or condition outside the attacker's control is required, and CONFIG_INTEL_TDX_GUEST/CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT are enabled by default in all mainstream distro and cloud guest kernels.
PR:N - The malicious host holds zero privileges within the vulnerable component (the confidential guest kernel) — the entire premise of TDX/SEV is that the hypervisor is untrusted and unauthorized with respect to guest memory. No guest credentials, account, or authentication are involved, and the triggering DMA allocations occur autonomously during boot and host-initiated device probe.
UI:N - No action by any guest user is needed; the host triggers coherent DMA allocations itself through virtual device hotplug or normal driver initialization, then fails the conversion hypercall.
S:C - The flaw breaks the hardware-enforced confidential-computing isolation boundary, causing guest-private pages protected by the TDX module / AMD-SP security authority to be returned to the guest allocator while mapped into the host-controlled shared alias. Resources under the guest's protection domain become readable and writable by a component in an entirely separate security authority, analogous to a DMA/IOMMU boundary bypass.
C:H - Pages leaked into the buddy allocator are subsequently reused for kernel slab objects, page tables, page cache, and user anonymous memory, all of which the untrusted host can read directly through the shared EPT/NPT mapping. This yields arbitrary disclosure of guest-private secrets — keys, credentials, and tenant workload data — the exact asset confidential computing exists to protect.
I:H - The host controls the memory backing the shared alias and can write arbitrary content into pages the guest believes are private, producing an arbitrary kernel-memory write primitive inside the guest. When such a page is reused as slab, page tables, or executable page cache, this escalates to full control-flow hijack and code execution within the confidential guest.
A:H - The failure path triggers `WARN_ONCE` in `__set_memory_enc_pgtable()` (immediate panic under panic_on_warn, which security-focused CoCo deployments are advised to enable), and host-controlled or unmapped pages circulating in the guest's page allocator readily cause oopses, corruption-induced panics, and unrecoverable faults. The DMA allocation itself also fails, breaking device operation."

No network protocol handler parses attacker data into this function.
AC:L - The attacker simply reads a sysfs file; the code path is deterministic, repeatable, and involves no race, no memory-layout grooming, and no condition that must happen to occur at exploit time. Whether a qualifying DT node exists is a static property of the target platform, which CVSS treats as target configuration rather than attack complexity.
PR:L - Any unprivileged local account can read `/sys/devices/.../uevent` and `/sys/devices/.../modalias`, which are mode 0644 and 0444 respectively — no capability, no user namespace, and no root is required.
UI:N - The attacker triggers the code path entirely on their own by reading a sysfs attribute; no victim needs to mount a filesystem, plug in a device, or take any other action.
S:U - The defect and its consequences are confined to the kernel's own address space and security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The write cursor is advanced past the end of the caller's buffer while the length accounting goes negative, and the loop guard omits the NUL terminator — out-of-bounds accounting adjacent to a heap-allocated `kobj_uevent_env` that is subsequently copied straight back to userspace, which can expose adjacent kernel heap contents.
I:H - The commit adds an explicit buffer overflow check because `str` is left pointing beyond the buffer's end with a corrupted remaining-length value; out-of-bounds write accounting on a kernel heap buffer is scored High per out-of-bounds-write guidance.
A:H - Corrupting memory past the end of a `kmalloc`'d uevent buffer can smash adjacent slab objects or redzones, producing a kernel oops or panic, and the path can be re-triggered arbitrarily often by an unprivileged reader."
