Title
Missing device-pointer validation in flash_copy() syscall allows userspace privilege escalation
Summary
The flash_copy() system call is verified by z_vrfy_flash_copy() in drivers/flash/flash_util.c. On builds with CONFIG_USERSPACE enabled, this handler is the kernel-side trust boundary for a user-mode caller. Prior to the fix it validated only the output buffer (K_SYSCALL_MEMORY_WRITE) and passed the two struct device * arguments, src_dev and dst_dev, directly into the implementation without any object validation — unlike every sibling flash syscall, which guards its device pointer with K_SYSCALL_DRIVER_FLASH. A user-mode thread fully controls the values of src_dev/dst_dev and the contents of its own address space. The implementation z_impl_flash_copy() dereferences these pointers and calls through their driver-API function tables (e.g. api->get_parameters(dst_dev), flash_read(src_dev, ...), flash_write(dst_dev, ...)). By supplying a pointer to a forged struct device whose api table contains attacker-chosen function pointers, an unprivileged thread can cause the kernel to call arbitrary code in supervisor mode; passing any arbitrary or invalid address otherwise yields a kernel crash or out-of-bounds read. The result is a local privilege escalation out of the userspace sandbox (with kernel denial-of-service and information disclosure as lesser outcomes). The fix adds K_SYSCALL_DRIVER_FLASH(src_dev, read) and K_SYSCALL_DRIVER_FLASH(dst_dev, write) to z_vrfy_flash_copy(), which verify each device is a registered flash-driver kernel object the calling thread is permitted to use before any dereference, closing the path completely.

Summary
The Reviews and Rating – Docplanner plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.1.4. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to trigger outbound scraping of external websites and write scraped review data into the wp_dp_reviews database table, as well as send feature-request emails from the site administrator's email address.

The EDD Product Catalog Feed by PixelYourSite plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized modification of data that can lead to a denial of service due to a missing capability check on the wpeddpcf_delete_feed function in all versions up to, and including, 1.0.2. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to delete arbitrary option values on the WordPress site. This can be leveraged to delete an option that would create an error on the site and deny service to legitimate users.

WooCommerce PayPal Payments <= 4.0.1 - Missing Authorization to Unauthenticated Order Manipulation and Information Disclosure
Summary
The WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized order manipulation and information disclosure due to missing authorization checks on the `ppc-create-order` and `ppc-get-order` WC-AJAX endpoints in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.1. The `ppc-create-order` endpoint accepts an arbitrary WooCommerce order ID in the `pay-now` context without validating order ownership, allowing attackers to create PayPal orders for any WC order and write PayPal metadata to it. The `ppc-get-order` endpoint returns full PayPal order details for any PayPal order ID without binding to the requester's session. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to chain these endpoints to manipulate other customers' order payment flows and exfiltrate sensitive order details (payer information, shipping data) by creating a PayPal order for a victim's WC order and then retrieving the PayPal order data.

Architecture and Design
  • Divide the product into anonymous, normal, privileged, and administrative areas. Reduce the attack surface by carefully mapping roles with data and functionality. Use role-based access control (RBAC) [REF-229] to enforce the roles at the appropriate boundaries.
  • Note that this approach may not protect against horizontal authorization, i.e., it will not protect a user from attacking others with the same role.

These checks may be different than the access control checks that are applied to more generic resources such as files, connections, processes, memory, and database records.   • Use a vetted library or framework that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid.
  • For example, consider using authorization frameworks such as the JAAS Authorization Framework [REF-233] and the OWASP ESAPI Access Control feature [REF-45].

  • For web applications, make sure that the access control mechanism is enforced correctly at the server side on every page. Users should not be able to access any unauthorized functionality or information by simply requesting direct access to that page.
  • One way to do this is to ensure that all pages containing sensitive information are not cached, and that all such pages restrict access to requests that are accompanied by an active and authenticated session token associated with a user who has the required permissions to access that page.

System Configuration Installation

Use the access control capabilities of your operating system and server environment and define your access control lists accordingly. Use a "default deny" policy when defining these ACLs.

CAPEC-665: Exploitation of Thunderbolt Protection Flaws

An adversary leverages a firmware weakness within the Thunderbolt protocol, on a computing device to manipulate Thunderbolt controller firmware in order to exploit vulnerabilities in the implementation of authorization and verification schemes within Thunderbolt protection mechanisms. Upon gaining physical access to a target device, the adversary conducts high-level firmware manipulation of the victim Thunderbolt controller SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) flash, through the use of a SPI Programing device and an external Thunderbolt device, typically as the target device is booting up. If successful, this allows the adversary to modify memory, subvert authentication mechanisms, spoof identities and content, and extract data and memory from the target device. Currently 7 major vulnerabilities exist within Thunderbolt protocol with 9 attack vectors as noted in the Execution Flow.
