CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9845 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-14 01:52 – Updated: 2025-11-25 18:32A use-after-free vulnerability can occur when an IndexedDB index is deleted while still in use by JavaScript code that is providing payload values to be stored. This results in a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 62, Firefox ESR < 60.2, and Thunderbird < 60.2.1.

GHSA-396P-373F-R9VM
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-09-06 15:30 – Updated: 2025-02-13 18:31A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter: nf_tables component can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation.
Due to a race condition between nf_tables netlink control plane transaction and nft_set element garbage collection, it is possible to underflow the reference counter causing a use-after-free vulnerability.
We recommend upgrading past commit 3e91b0ebd994635df2346353322ac51ce84ce6d8.

GHSA-397Q-F49X-2C9J
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-10-04 18:31 – Updated: 2026-02-05 18:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
fs/ntfs3: Validate data run offset
This adds sanity checks for data run offset. We should make sure data run offset is legit before trying to unpack them, otherwise we may encounter use-after-free or some unexpected memory access behaviors.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
