CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
10952 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 16:59 – Updated: 2024-04-04 02:34This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PhantomPDF 9.6.0.25114. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the processing of script within a Calculate action of a text field. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-9044.

GHSA-23X6-W5Q4-2MQW
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-12-27 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-03 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
net: defer final 'struct net' free in netns dismantle
Ilya reported a slab-use-after-free in dst_destroy [1]
Issue is in xfrm6_net_init() and xfrm4_net_init() :
They copy xfrm[46]_dst_ops_template into net->xfrm.xfrm[46]_dst_ops.
But net structure might be freed before all the dst callbacks are called. So when dst_destroy() calls later :
if (dst->ops->destroy) dst->ops->destroy(dst);
dst->ops points to the old net->xfrm.xfrm[46]_dst_ops, which has been freed.
See a relevant issue fixed in :
ac888d58869b ("net: do not delay dst_entries_add() in dst_release()")
A fix is to queue the 'struct net' to be freed after one another cleanup_net() round (and existing rcu_barrier())

GHSA-242X-7CM6-4W8J
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 16:59 – Updated: 2026-06-09 10:22In xsltCopyText in transform.c in libxslt 1.1.33, a pointer variable isn't reset under certain circumstances. If the relevant memory area happened to be freed and reused in a certain way, a bounds check could fail and memory outside a buffer could be written to, or uninitialized data could be disclosed.
Nokogiri prior to version 1.10.5 contains a vulnerable version of libxslt. Nokogiri version 1.10.5 upgrades the dependency to libxslt 1.1.34, which contains a patch for this issue.

GHSA-249V-WMCW-XVGM
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-05-01 15:30 – Updated: 2026-05-07 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
HID: logitech-hidpp: Prevent use-after-free on force feedback initialisation failure
Presently, if the force feedback initialisation fails when probing the Logitech G920 Driving Force Racing Wheel for Xbox One, an error number will be returned and propagated before the userspace infrastructure (sysfs and /dev/input) has been torn down. If userspace ignores the errors and continues to use its references to these dangling entities, a UAF will promptly follow.
We have 2 options; continue to return the error, but ensure that all of the infrastructure is torn down accordingly or continue to treat this condition as a warning by emitting the message but returning success. It is thought that the original author's intention was to emit the warning but keep the device functional, less the force feedback feature, so let's go with that.

GHSA-24C8-3JP4-H926
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-11-05 18:32 – Updated: 2024-11-08 21:33In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
KVM: arm64: Unregister redistributor for failed vCPU creation
Alex reports that syzkaller has managed to trigger a use-after-free when tearing down a VM:
BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in kvm_put_kvm+0x300/0xe68 virt/kvm/kvm_main.c:5769 Read of size 8 at addr ffffff801c6890d0 by task syz.3.2219/10758

Upon closer inspection, it appears that we do not properly tear down the MMIO registration for a vCPU that fails creation late in the game, e.g. a vCPU w/ the same ID already exists in the VM.
It is important to consider the context of commit that introduced this bug by moving the unregistration out of __kvm_vgic_vcpu_destroy(). That change correctly sought to avoid an srcu v. config_lock inversion by breaking up the vCPU teardown into two parts, one guarded by the config_lock.
Fix the use-after-free while avoiding lock inversion by adding a special-cased unregistration to __kvm_vgic_vcpu_destroy(). This is safe because failed vCPUs are torn down outside of the config_lock.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
