CWE-416
Weakness AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
Mapping guidance
This CWE entry is at the Variant level of abstraction, which is a preferred level of abstraction for mapping to the root causes of vulnerabilities.
Carefully read both the name and description to ensure that this mapping is an appropriate fit. Do not try to 'force' a mapping to a lower-level Base/Variant simply to comply with this preferred level of abstraction.

Modes of introduction
Detection methods
Fuzzing
Fuzz testing (fuzzing) is a powerful technique for generating large numbers of diverse inputs - either randomly or algorithmically - and dynamically invoking the code with those inputs. Even with random inputs, it is often capable of generating unexpected results such as crashes, memory corruption, or resource consumption. Fuzzing effectively produces repeatable test cases that clearly indicate bugs, which helps developers to diagnose the issues.
Effectiveness: High
Automated Static Analysis
Automated static analysis, commonly referred to as Static Application Security Testing (SAST), can find some instances of this weakness by analyzing source code (or binary/compiled code) without having to execute it. Typically, this is done by building a model of data flow and control flow, then searching for potentially-vulnerable patterns that connect "sources" (origins of input) with "sinks" (destinations where the data interacts with external components, a lower layer such as the OS, etc.)
Effectiveness: High
Automated Dynamic Analysis
Use tools that are integrated during compilation to insert runtime error-checking mechanisms related to memory safety errors, such as AddressSanitizer (ASan) for C/C++ [REF-1518].
Effectiveness: Moderate
Crafted inputs are necessary to reach the code containing the error, such as generated by fuzzers. Also, these tools may reduce performance, and they only report the error condition - not the original mistake that led to the error.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-14 15:32 – Updated: 2024-07-03 18:40In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
tcp: Fix Use-After-Free in tcp_ao_connect_init
Since call_rcu, which is called in the hlist_for_each_entry_rcu traversal of tcp_ao_connect_init, is not part of the RCU read critical section, it is possible that the RCU grace period will pass during the traversal and the key will be free.
To prevent this, it should be changed to hlist_for_each_entry_safe.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-19 18:31 – Updated: 2026-09-03 15:32In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
fprobe: Fix unregister_fprobe() to wait for RCU grace period
Commit 4346ba1604093 ("fprobe: Rewrite fprobe on function-graph tracer") changed fprobe to register struct fprobe to an rcu-hlist, but it forgot to wait for RCU GP. Thus there can be use-after-free if the fprobe is released right after unregistering. This can be happened on fprobe event and sample module code.
To fix this issue, add synchronize_rcu() in unregister_fprobe().
Note that BPF is OK because fprobe is used as a part of bpf_kprobe_multi_link. This unregisters its fprobe in bpf_kprobe_multi_link_release() and it is deallocated via bpf_kprobe_multi_link_dealloc(), which is invoked from bpf_link_defer_dealloc_rcu_gp() RCU callback.
For BPF, this also introduced unregister_fprobe_async() which does NOT wait for RCU grace priod.

GHSA-Q3V2-68CR-QHRM
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-19 18:31 – Updated: 2026-10-15 12:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
net: hsr: defer node table free until after RCU readers
HSR node-list and node-status generic-netlink operations run under rcu_read_lock(). They walk hsr->node_db through hsr_get_next_node() and hsr_get_node_data(), but RTM_DELLINK teardown removes the same node table with plain list_del() and frees each node immediately.
That lets a generic-netlink reader hold a struct hsr_node pointer across hsr_dellink(). In a KASAN build, widening the reader window after hsr_get_next_node() obtains the node reproduces a slab-use-after-free when the reader copies node->macaddress_A; the freeing stack is hsr_del_nodes() from hsr_dellink().
Use list_del_rcu() and defer the free through the existing hsr_free_node_rcu() callback. This matches the lifetime rule used by the HSR prune paths, which already delete nodes with list_del_rcu() and call_rcu().

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
