Summary
A buffer overflow vulnerability in the DNS proxy and DNS Server features of Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS® Software allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition (all PAN-OS platforms except Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access) or potentially execute arbitrary code by sending specially crafted network traffic (PA-Series hardware only). Panorama, Cloud NGFW, and Prisma® Access are not impacted by this vulnerability.

free5GC has Heap Buffer Overflow in UPF Leading to Denial of Service
Summary
free5GC go-upf is the User Plane Function (UPF) implementation for 5G networks that is part of the free5GC project. Versions prior to 1.2.8 have a Heap-based Buffer Overflow (CWE-122) vulnerability leading to Denial of Service. Remote attackers can crash the UPF network element by sending a specially crafted PFCP Session Modification Request with an invalid SDF Filter length field. This causes a heap buffer overflow, resulting in complete service disruption for all connected UEs and potential cascading failures affecting the SMF. All deployments of free5GC using the UPF component may be affected. Version 1.2.8 of go-upf contains a fix.

Title
Capstone doesn't check Skipdata length, leading to cs_insn.bytes heap buffer overflow
Summary
Capstone is a disassembly framework. In versions 6.0.0-Alpha5 and prior, Skipdata length is not bounds-checked, so a user-provided skipdata callback can make cs_disasm/cs_disasm_iter memcpy more than 24 bytes into cs_insn.bytes, causing a heap buffer overflow in the disassembly path. Commit cbef767ab33b82166d263895f24084b75b316df3 fixes the issue.

Title
AIS-catcher Integer Underflow in MQTT Packet Parsing leading to Heap Buffer Overflow

AIS-catcher is a multi-platform AIS receiver. Prior to version 0.64, an integer underflow vulnerability exists in the MQTT parsing logic of AIS-catcher. This vulnerability allows an attacker to trigger a massive Heap Buffer Overflow by sending a malformed MQTT packet with a manipulated Topic Length field. This leads to an immediate Denial of Service (DoS) and, when used as a library, severe Memory Corruption that can be leveraged for Remote Code Execution (RCE). This issue has been patched in version 0.64.

LIBPNG is vulnerable to a heap buffer overflow in `png_combine_row` triggered via `png_image_finish_read`
Summary
LIBPNG is a reference library for use in applications that read, create, and manipulate PNG (Portable Network Graphics) raster image files. From version 1.6.0 to before 1.6.51, there is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the libpng simplified API function png_image_finish_read when processing 16-bit interlaced PNGs with 8-bit output format. Attacker-crafted interlaced PNG files cause heap writes beyond allocated buffer bounds. This issue has been patched in version 1.6.51.

  • Use automatic buffer overflow detection mechanisms that are offered by certain compilers or compiler extensions. Examples include: the Microsoft Visual Studio /GS flag, Fedora/Red Hat FORTIFY_SOURCE GCC flag, StackGuard, and ProPolice, which provide various mechanisms including canary-based detection and range/index checking.
  • D3-SFCV (Stack Frame Canary Validation) from D3FEND [REF-1334] discusses canary-based detection in detail.

Strategy: Environment Hardening

  • Run or compile the software using features or extensions that randomly arrange the positions of a program's executable and libraries in memory. Because this makes the addresses unpredictable, it can prevent an attacker from reliably jumping to exploitable code.
  • Examples include Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) [REF-58] [REF-60] and Position-Independent Executables (PIE) [REF-64]. Imported modules may be similarly realigned if their default memory addresses conflict with other modules, in a process known as "rebasing" (for Windows) and "prelinking" (for Linux) [REF-1332] using randomly generated addresses. ASLR for libraries cannot be used in conjunction with prelink since it would require relocating the libraries at run-time, defeating the whole purpose of prelinking.

CAPEC-92: Forced Integer Overflow

This attack forces an integer variable to go out of range. The integer variable is often used as an offset such as size of memory allocation or similarly. The attacker would typically control the value of such variable and try to get it out of range. For instance the integer in question is incremented past the maximum possible value, it may wrap to become a very small, or negative number, therefore providing a very incorrect value which can lead to unexpected behavior. At worst the attacker can execute arbitrary code.
