CWE-269

Improper Privilege Management

The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor.

Title
Crun incorrectly parses `crun exec` option `-u`, leading to privilege escalation
Summary
crun is an open source OCI Container Runtime fully written in C. In versions 1.19 through 1.26, the `crun exec` option `-u` (`--user`) is incorrectly parsed. The value `1` is interpreted as UID 0 and GID 0 when it should have been UID 1 and GID 0. The process thus runs with higher privileges than expected. Version 1.27 patches the issue.

Title
RSSN has Arbitrary Code Execution via Unvalidated JIT Instruction Generation in C-FFI Interface
Summary
rssn is a scientific computing library for Rust, combining a high-performance symbolic computation engine with numerical methods support and physics simulations functionalities. The vulnerability exists in the JIT (Just-In-Time) compilation engine, which is fully exposed via the CFFI (Foreign Function Interface). Due to Improper Input Validation and External Control of Code Generation, an attacker can supply malicious parameters or instruction sequences through the CFFI layer. Since the library often operates with elevated privileges or within high-performance computing contexts, this allows for Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE) at the privilege level of the host process.
CWE
  • CWE-94 - Improper Control of Generation of Code ('Code Injection')
  • CWE-269 - Improper Privilege Management
  • CWE-695 - Use of Low-Level Functionality

Title
Umbraco Affected by Vertical Privilege Escalation via Missing Authorization Checks
Summary
Umbraco is an ASP.NET CMS. From 15.3.1 to before 16.5.1 and 17.2.2, A privilege escalation vulnerability has been identified in Umbraco CMS. Under certain conditions, authenticated backoffice users with permission to manage users, may be able to elevate their privileges due to insufficient authorization enforcement when modifying user group memberships. The affected functionality does not properly validate whether a user has sufficient privileges to assign highly privileged roles. This vulnerability is fixed in 16.5.1 and 17.2.2.

Title
Mass Assignment Privilege Escalation in Checkmate
Summary
Checkmate is an open-source, self-hosted tool designed to track and monitor server hardware, uptime, response times, and incidents in real-time with beautiful visualizations. In versions from 3.5.1 and prior, a mass assignment vulnerability in Checkmate's user profile update endpoint allows any authenticated user to escalate their privileges to superadmin, bypassing all role-based access controls. An attacker can modify their user role to gain complete administrative access to the application, including the ability to view all users, modify critical configurations, and access sensitive system data. At time of publication, there are no publicly available patches.

Title
Jellyfin Possible Organization/Secret Compromise from dangerous CI implementation
Summary
Jellyfin is an open-source media system. The code-quality.yml GitHub Actions workflow in jellyfin/jellyfin-ios is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution via pull requests from forked repositories. Due to the workflow's elevated permissions (nearly all write permissions), this vulnerability enables full repository takeover of jellyfin/jellyfin-ios, exfiltration of highly privileged secrets, Apple App Store supply chain attack, GitHub Container Registry (ghcr.io) package poisoning, and full jellyfin organization compromise via cross-repository token usage. Note: This is not a code vulnerability, but a vulnerability in the GitHub Actions workflows. No new version is required for this GHSA and end users do not need to take any actions.

The code-quality.yml GitHub Actions workflow in jellyfin/jellyfin-ios is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution via pull requests from forked repositories. Due to the workflow\u0027s elevated permissions (nearly all write permissions), this vulnerability enables full repository takeover of jellyfin/jellyfin-ios, exfiltration of highly privileged secrets, Apple App Store supply chain attack, GitHub Container Registry (ghcr.io) package poisoning, and full jellyfin organization compromise via cross-repository token usage. Note: This is not a code vulnerability, but a vulnerability in the GitHub Actions workflows. No new version is required for this GHSA and end users do not need to take any actions."

Title
StudioCMS: REST API Missing Rank Check Allows Admin to Create Peer Admin Accounts
Summary
StudioCMS is a server-side-rendered, Astro native, headless content management system. Prior to 0.4.3, the REST API createUser endpoint uses string-based rank checks that only block creating owner accounts, while the Dashboard API uses indexOf-based rank comparison that prevents creating users at or above your own rank. This inconsistency allows an admin to create additional admin accounts via the REST API, enabling privilege proliferation and persistence. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.4.3.

Title
Mullvad VPN for macOS: Local Privilege Escalation via unverified bundle path in installer
Summary
Mullvad VPN is a VPN client app for desktop and mobile. When using macOS with versions 2026.1 and below, Mullvad VPN may allow local privilege escalation during installation or upgrade. The installer package executes binaries from /Applications/Mullvad VPN.app without verifying if the bundle is attacker-controlled or that the path is the legitimate Mullvad application. A user in the admin group can pre-place a crafted application bundle at that location and may be able to achieve code execution as root. Since the issue only affected the installer, there is no immediate need for users to update if they are already running an older version. This issue has been fixed in version 2026.2-beta1.

Mitigation ID: MIT-1

Phases: Architecture and Design, Operation

Description:

  • Very carefully manage the setting, management, and handling of privileges. Explicitly manage trust zones in the software.
Mitigation ID: MIT-48

Phase: Architecture and Design

Strategy: Separation of Privilege

Description:

  • Follow the principle of least privilege when assigning access rights to entities in a software system.
Mitigation ID: MIT-49

Phase: Architecture and Design

Strategy: Separation of Privilege

Description:

  • Consider following the principle of separation of privilege. Require multiple conditions to be met before permitting access to a system resource.
CAPEC-122: Privilege Abuse

An adversary is able to exploit features of the target that should be reserved for privileged users or administrators but are exposed to use by lower or non-privileged accounts. Access to sensitive information and functionality must be controlled to ensure that only authorized users are able to access these resources.

CAPEC-233: Privilege Escalation

An adversary exploits a weakness enabling them to elevate their privilege and perform an action that they are not supposed to be authorized to perform.

CAPEC-58: Restful Privilege Elevation

An adversary identifies a Rest HTTP (Get, Put, Delete) style permission method allowing them to perform various malicious actions upon server data due to lack of access control mechanisms implemented within the application service accepting HTTP messages.
