Summary
OpenBao's Certificate Authentication Allows Token Renewal With Different Certificate
Details

Background

OpenBao's Certificate authentication method, when a token renewal is requested and disable_binding=true is set, attempts to verify the current request's presented mTLS certificate matches the original. Token renewals for other authentication methods do not require any supplied login information.

Impact

Due to incorrect matching, the certificate authentication method would allow renewal of tokens for which the attacker had a sibling certificate+key signed by the same CA, but which did not necessarily match the original role or the originally supplied certificate. This implies an attacker could still authenticate to OpenBao in a similar scope, however, token renewal implies that an attacker may be able to extend the lifetime of dynamic leases held by the original token. This attack requires knowledge of either the original token or its accessor.

This vulnerability is originally from HashiCorp Vault.

Patches

This has been addressed in v2.5.3.

Workarounds

Ensure privileged roles are tightly scoped to single certificates.

Parse Server has a bypass of class-level permissions in LiveQuery
Details

Impact

Class-level permissions (CLP) are not enforced for LiveQuery subscriptions. An unauthenticated or unauthorized client can subscribe to any LiveQuery-enabled class and receive real-time events for all objects, regardless of CLP restrictions.

All Parse Server deployments that use LiveQuery with class-level permissions are affected. Data intended to be restricted by CLP is leaked to unauthorized subscribers in real time.

Patches

The fix enforces CLP before creating the subscription and during event delivery.

Workarounds

Disable LiveQuery for classes that use CLP restrictions by removing them from the liveQuery.classNames server configuration.

Summary

On macOS node-host, optional exec-approval allowlist mode previously treated basename-only entries (for example echo) as trusted command matches. This could allow a same-name local binary (for example ./echo) to run without approval under security=allowlist + ask=on-miss.

Scope / Preconditions

  • macOS node-host path.
  • Optional exec approvals feature enabled with security=allowlist.
  • Basename-only allowlist entries configured.

Default install posture is not impacted: security=deny by default.

Affected Packages / Versions

  • Latest published npm version at triage time: 2026.2.21-2

Remediation

  • Enforced path-only allowlist matching on macOS node-host (basename fallback removed).
  • Added migration for legacy basename allowlist entries to last-resolved paths when available.
  • UI/store validation now rejects non-path allowlist patterns.

Architecture and Design
  • Divide the product into anonymous, normal, privileged, and administrative areas. Reduce the attack surface by carefully mapping roles with data and functionality. Use role-based access control (RBAC) [REF-229] to enforce the roles at the appropriate boundaries.
  • Note that this approach may not protect against horizontal authorization, i.e., it will not protect a user from attacking others with the same role.

Ensure that access control checks are performed related to the business logic. These checks may be different than the access control checks that are applied to more generic resources such as files, connections, processes, memory, and database records. For example, a database may restrict access for medical records to a specific database user, but each record might only be intended to be accessible to the patient and the patient's doctor [REF-7].

  • Use a vetted library or framework that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid.
  • For example, consider using authorization frameworks such as the JAAS Authorization Framework [REF-233] and the OWASP ESAPI Access Control feature [REF-45].

Architecture and Design
  • For web applications, make sure that the access control mechanism is enforced correctly at the server side on every page. Users should not be able to access any unauthorized functionality or information by simply requesting direct access to that page.
  • One way to do this is to ensure that all pages containing sensitive information are not cached, and that all such pages restrict access to requests that are accompanied by an active and authenticated session token associated with a user who has the required permissions to access that page.
