CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
12540 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-01-01 18:30 – Updated: 2026-01-05 21:30Use After Free vulnerability was discovered in fs/vfs/fs_rename code of the Apache NuttX RTOS, that due recursive implementation and single buffer use by two different pointer variables allowed arbitrary user provided size buffer reallocation and write to the previously freed heap chunk, that in specific cases could cause unintended virtual filesystem rename/move operation results.
This issue affects Apache NuttX RTOS: from 7.20 before 12.11.0.
Users of virtual filesystem based services with write access especially when exposed over the network (i.e. FTP) are affected and recommended to upgrade to version 12.11.0 that fixes the issue.

GHSA-MRP3-X3FF-8XJ3
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-08-10 15:33 – Updated: 2026-10-21 15:40In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
Bluetooth: hci_sync: extend conn_hash lookup critical sections
Using RCU-protected pointers outside the critical sections without refcount is incorrect and may result to UAF.
Extend critical section to cover both hci_conn_hash lookup and use of the returned conn.
Add surrounding rcu_read_lock() also when return value is not used, in preparation for RCU lockdep requirement to hci_lookup_le_connect().
This avoids concurrent deletion of the conn before we are done dereferencing it.
Also, make sure to hold hdev->lock when accessing hdev->accept_list.

GHSA-MRQ7-MRHJ-VM2G
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-08-10 15:33 – Updated: 2026-08-23 15:32In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: ath6kl: fix use-after-free in aggr_reset_state()
The aggr_reset_state() function uses timer_delete() (non-synchronous) for the aggregation timer before proceeding to delete TID state and before the structure is freed by callers like aggr_module_destroy().
If the timer callback (aggr_timeout) is executing when aggr_reset_state() is called, the callback will continue to access aggr_conn fields like rx_tid[] and stat[] which may be freed immediately after by kfree(aggr_info->aggr_conn) in aggr_module_destroy().
Additionally, the timer callback can re-arm itself via mod_timer() while aggr_reset_state() is running, creating a more complex race condition.
Use timer_delete_sync() instead to ensure any running timer callback has completed before returning.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
