Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9850 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-05-27 15:33 – Updated: 2026-05-30 12:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

gfs2: Fix slab-use-after-free in qd_put

Commit a475c5dd16e5 ("gfs2: Free quota data objects synchronously") started freeing quota data objects during filesystem shutdown instead of putting them back onto the LRU list, but it failed to remove these objects from the LRU list, causing LRU list corruption. This caused use-after-free when the shrinker (gfs2_qd_shrink_scan) tried to access already-freed objects on the LRU list.

Fix this by removing qd objects from the LRU list before freeing them in qd_put().

Initial fix from Deepanshu Kartikey kartikey406@gmail.com.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/xe/pf: Fix use-after-free in migration restore

When an error is returned from xe_sriov_pf_migration_restore_produce(), the data pointer is not set to NULL, which can trigger use-after-free in subsequent .write() calls. Set the pointer to NULL upon error to fix the problem.

GHSA-V5R3-WF29-QQ37

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-12-28 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-03 21:32
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

powerpc/mm/fault: Fix kfence page fault reporting

copy_from_kernel_nofault() can be called when doing read of /proc/kcore. /proc/kcore can have some unmapped kfence objects which when read via copy_from_kernel_nofault() can cause page faults. Since *_nofault() functions define their own fixup table for handling fault, use that instead of asking kfence to handle such faults.

Hence we search the exception tables for the nip which generated the fault. If there is an entry then we let the fixup table handler handle the page fault by returning an error from within ___do_page_fault().

This can be easily triggered if someone tries to do dd from /proc/kcore. eg. dd if=/proc/kcore of=/dev/null bs=1M

Some example false negatives:

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
