CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9868 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-04-24 15:32 – Updated: 2026-06-01 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
bcache: fix cached_dev.sb_bio use-after-free and crash
In our production environment, we have received multiple crash reports regarding libceph, which have caught our attention:

After analyzing the coredump file, we found that the address of dc->sb_bio has been freed. We know that cached_dev is only freed when it is stopped.
Since sb_bio is a part of struct cached_dev, rather than an alloc every time. If the device is stopped while writing to the superblock, the released address will be accessed at endio.
This patch hopes to wait for sb_write to complete in cached_dev_free.
It should be noted that we analyzed the cause of the problem, then tell all details to the QWEN and adopted the modifications it made.

GHSA-G6Q3-47R5-Q8FC
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-03-01 00:30 – Updated: 2024-12-10 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm: bridge/panel: Cleanup connector on bridge detach
If we don't call drm_connector_cleanup() manually in panel_bridge_detach(), the connector will be cleaned up with the other DRM objects in the call to drm_mode_config_cleanup(). However, since our drm_connector is devm-allocated, by the time drm_mode_config_cleanup() will be called, our connector will be long gone. Therefore, the connector must be cleaned up when the bridge is detached to avoid use-after-free conditions.
v2: Cleanup connector only if it was created
v3: Add FIXME

GHSA-G779-V36V-3W99
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-27 15:31 – Updated: 2026-07-14 15:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
bpf, test_run: Fix use-after-free issue in eth_skb_pkt_type()
KMSAN reported a use-after-free issue in eth_skb_pkt_type()[1]. The cause of the issue was that eth_skb_pkt_type() accessed skb's data that didn't contain an Ethernet header. This occurs when bpf_prog_test_run_xdp() passes an invalid value as the user_data argument to bpf_test_init().
Fix this by returning an error when user_data is less than ETH_HLEN in bpf_test_init(). Additionally, remove the check for "if (user_size > size)" as it is unnecessary.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
