Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

11893 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-09-30 18:33 – Updated: 2026-10-01 03:31
VLAI
Details

A remote, unauthenticated TLS client can make a server crash or call through a freed pointer if its sni_callback assigns a different context to SSLSocket.context (the documented way to select a certificate per server name) and nothing else keeps the original ssl.SSLContext alive. Typical cases are servers that create an SSLContext per connection or replace it while connections are open; servers that wrap their listening socket with it are not affected.

Mitigation: keep a reference to every SSLContext that sets sni_callback for the lifetime of the server. TLS clients are not affected.

GHSA-7JWJ-6G7W-4C9Q

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-05-01 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-10 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nilfs2: fix use-after-free bug of ns_writer on remount

If a nilfs2 filesystem is downgraded to read-only due to metadata corruption on disk and is remounted read/write, or if emergency read-only remount is performed, detaching a log writer and synchronizing the filesystem can be done at the same time.

In these cases, use-after-free of the log writer (hereinafter nilfs->ns_writer) can happen as shown in the scenario below:

Task1 Task2 -------------------------------- ------------------------------ nilfs_construct_segment nilfs_segctor_sync init_wait init_waitqueue_entry add_wait_queue schedule nilfs_remount (R/W remount case) nilfs_attach_log_writer nilfs_detach_log_writer nilfs_segctor_destroy kfree finish_wait _raw_spin_lock_irqsave __raw_spin_lock_irqsave do_raw_spin_lock debug_spin_lock_before <-- use-after-free

While Task1 is sleeping, nilfs->ns_writer is freed by Task2. After Task1 waked up, Task1 accesses nilfs->ns_writer which is already freed. This scenario diagram is based on the Shigeru Yoshida's post [1].

This patch fixes the issue by not detaching nilfs->ns_writer on remount so that this UAF race doesn't happen. Along with this change, this patch also inserts a few necessary read-only checks with superblock instance where only the ns_writer pointer was used to check if the filesystem is read-only.

Details

Nokogiri before 1.18.4 bundles a vulnerable version of libxslt (prior to 1.1.43) that contains two use-after-free vulnerabilities: CVE-2025-24855 (use-after-free of the XPath context node due to xsltEvalXPathStringNs leaking xpathCtxt->node) and CVE-2024-55549 (use-after-free related to excluded result prefixes/namespaces). Processing crafted XSLT can trigger memory corruption. Nokogiri 1.18.4 upgrades the bundled libxslt to 1.1.43 to resolve these issues.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-05-02 18:31 – Updated: 2025-11-12 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ftrace: Fix invalid address access in lookup_rec() when index is 0

KASAN reported follow problem:

BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in lookup_rec Read of size 8 at addr ffff000199270ff0 by task modprobe CPU: 2 Comm: modprobe Call trace: kasan_report __asan_load8 lookup_rec ftrace_location arch_check_ftrace_location check_kprobe_address_safe register_kprobe

When checking pg->records[pg->index - 1].ip in lookup_rec(), it can get a pg which is newly added to ftrace_pages_start in ftrace_process_locs(). Before the first pg->index++, index is 0 and accessing pg->records[-1].ip will cause this problem.

Don't check the ip when pg->index is 0.

Details

In process_service_attr_rsp of sdp_discovery.cc, there is a possible use after free due to a logic error in the code. This could lead to remote (proximal/adjacent) code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
