Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9874 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

power: supply: pm8916_lbc: Fix use-after-free in power_supply_changed()

Using the devm_ variant for requesting IRQ before the devm_ variant for allocating/registering the power_supply handle, means that the power_supply handle will be deallocated/unregistered before the interrupt handler (since devm_ naturally deallocates in reverse allocation order). This means that during removal, there is a race condition where an interrupt can fire just after the power_supply handle has been freed, but just before the corresponding unregistration of the IRQ handler has run.

This will lead to the IRQ handler calling power_supply_changed() with a freed power_supply handle. Which usually crashes the system or otherwise silently corrupts the memory...

Note that there is a similar situation which can also happen during probe(); the possibility of an interrupt firing before registering the power_supply handle. This would then lead to the nasty situation of using the power_supply handle uninitialized in power_supply_changed().

Fix this racy use-after-free by making sure the IRQ is requested after the registration of the power_supply handle.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-07-04 15:31 – Updated: 2026-05-12 15:30

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ipc: fix to protect IPCS lookups using RCU

syzbot reported that it discovered a use-after-free vulnerability, 0

idr_for_each() is protected by rwsem, but this is not enough. If it is not protected by RCU read-critical region, when idr_for_each() calls radix_tree_node_free() through call_rcu() to free the radix_tree_node structure, the node will be freed immediately, and when reading the next node in radix_tree_for_each_slot(), the already freed memory may be read.

Therefore, we need to add code to make sure that idr_for_each() is protected within the RCU read-critical region when we call it in shm_destroy_orphaned().

Foxit PDF Reader AcroForm Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PDF Reader. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the handling of AcroForms. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-23736.

GHSA-6CPX-W2CG-QMGR

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-02-27 03:34 – Updated: 2025-09-19 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/mlx5: HWS, change error flow on matcher disconnect

Currently, when firmware failure occurs during matcher disconnect flow, the error flow of the function reconnects the matcher back and returns an error, which continues running the calling function and eventually frees the matcher that is being disconnected. This leads to a case where we have a freed matcher on the matchers list, which in turn leads to use-after-free and eventual crash.

This patch fixes that by not trying to reconnect the matcher back when some FW command fails during disconnect.

Note that we're dealing here with FW error. We can't overcome this problem. This might lead to bad steering state (e.g. wrong connection between matchers), and will also lead to resource leakage, as it is the case with any other error handling during resource destruction.

However, the goal here is to allow the driver to continue and not crash the machine with use-after-free error.

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
