Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

11068 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Trimble SketchUp Viewer SKP File Parsing Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Trimble SketchUp Viewer. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of SKP files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-24106.

GHSA-3RVW-7PXP-G8XM

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-10-21 18:30 – Updated: 2025-11-04 00:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

fbdev: pxafb: Fix possible use after free in pxafb_task()

In the pxafb_probe function, it calls the pxafb_init_fbinfo function, after which &fbi->task is associated with pxafb_task. Moreover, within this pxafb_init_fbinfo function, the pxafb_blank function within the &pxafb_ops struct is capable of scheduling work.

If we remove the module which will call pxafb_remove to make cleanup, it will call unregister_framebuffer function which can call do_unregister_framebuffer to free fbi->fb through put_fb_info(fb_info), while the work mentioned above will be used. The sequence of operations that may lead to a UAF bug is as follows:

CPU0 CPU1

                               | pxafb_task

pxafb_remove | unregister_framebuffer(info) | do_unregister_framebuffer(fb_info) | put_fb_info(fb_info) | // free fbi->fb | set_ctrlr_state(fbi, state) | __pxafb_lcd_power(fbi, 0) | fbi->lcd_power(on, &fbi->fb.var) | //use fbi->fb

Fix it by ensuring that the work is canceled before proceeding with the cleanup in pxafb_remove.

Note that only root user can remove the driver at runtime.
