Details

By making minor configuration changes to the TropOS 4th Gen device, an authenticated user with the ability to run user level shell commands can enable access via secure shell (SSH) to an unrestricted root shell. This is possible through abuse of a particular set of scripts and executables that allow for certain commands to be run as root from an unprivileged context.

Details

The Themehunk Login Registration plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation in versions up to, and including, 1.0.2. This is due to the handle_frontend_register() function in the unauthenticated /thlogin/v1/register REST endpoint accepting a user-controlled 'role' parameter and validating it only against get_editable_roles() — which returns every defined editable site role, including 'editor' — before passing it to wp_insert_user(). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers, when public user registration is enabled, to create new accounts with the editor role.

Details

The ByteCoreStack – MCP Connector for AI Tools plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.3 This is due to the wp_update_user_meta MCP tool in execute_tool gating writes solely with current_user_can('edit_user', $uid) — a check that WordPress core's map_meta_cap resolves to the read primitive when the target user ID matches the caller's own — while enforcing an incomplete meta key blocklist that covers only user_pass, user_activation_key, and session_tokens, leaving the wp_capabilities and wp_user_level meta keys entirely unprotected. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access and above to elevate their privileges to Administrator by issuing a wp_update_user_meta call over the MCP JSON-RPC endpoint with key=wp_capabilities and an arbitrary role array such as {'administrator': true} targeting their own user ID, causing WordPress to load that account as an Administrator on the next request.

Details

Incorrect privilege assignment in the admin user-management component of Webkul Bagisto 2.4.9 allows an authenticated backend user holding only the settings.users.edit permission to escalate to full administrator. The user-update endpoint (route admin.settings.users.update, UserController::update()) does not verify that the actor is permitted to grant the requested role, does not prevent a user from changing their own role, and does not restrict assignment to roles whose permission set is a subset of the actor's own. By submitting a request that sets role_id to the Administrator role for their own account, a low-privileged administrator gains every admin-panel capability, including store configuration, payment gateway credentials, and customer PII.

Mitigation MIT-1
Architecture and Design Operation

Very carefully manage the setting, management, and handling of privileges. Explicitly manage trust zones in the software.

Mitigation MIT-48
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Separation of Privilege

Follow the principle of least privilege when assigning access rights to entities in a software system.

Mitigation MIT-49
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Separation of Privilege

Consider following the principle of separation of privilege. Require multiple conditions to be met before permitting access to a system resource.

CAPEC-122: Privilege Abuse

An adversary is able to exploit features of the target that should be reserved for privileged users or administrators but are exposed to use by lower or non-privileged accounts. Access to sensitive information and functionality must be controlled to ensure that only authorized users are able to access these resources.

CAPEC-233: Privilege Escalation

An adversary exploits a weakness enabling them to elevate their privilege and perform an action that they are not supposed to be authorized to perform.

CAPEC-58: Restful Privilege Elevation

An adversary identifies a Rest HTTP (Get, Put, Delete) style permission method allowing them to perform various malicious actions upon server data due to lack of access control mechanisms implemented within the application service accepting HTTP messages.
