Title
MISP Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Unvalidated Galaxy Icon Field in Correlation Graph
Summary
MISP contains a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the galaxy icon handling path. The icon field of a galaxy object was persisted without any server-side validation through the galaxy add, edit, and sync/import capture endpoints. The stored value was subsequently concatenated directly into HTML markup by the D3-based correlation graph rendering scripts (both the default and Overmind themes) using the .html() method. A user holding the perm_galaxy_editor permission, which is granted to the stock User role, could store arbitrary HTML or JavaScript in the icon field. Any other user who opened the correlation graph of an event containing a cluster belonging to that galaxy would have the injected script executed in their browser session. Impact: - Arbitrary script execution in the context of the victim's MISP session - Potential theft of session credentials, manipulation of displayed data, or initiation of actions on behalf of the victim - Affects both the default and Overmind UI themes Affected versions: <2.5.48

8ea5783ddcfe fix: [security] Galaxy icons are icon names, and the 382869c811e8…
Fix summary

The vulnerability is remediated by enforcing strict input validation on the galaxy icon field so that only valid Font Awesome icon names (lowercase alphanumeric characters and dashes) are accepted at write time. The sync/import capture path discards any icon value that does not conform. The correlation graph JSON generation falls back to a safe default icon for any previously stored invalid value. On the client side, both correlation graph scripts now set the icon as a CSS class attribute rather than injecting it as raw HTML, and apply an additional regex sanitization pass. The asset cache-busting version is incremented to ensure browsers load the corrected scripts.

Patch summary

Added a static isValidIconName() method and a regex constant (ICON_NAME_PATTERN) to the Galaxy model, plus a model-level validation rule restricting the icon field to lowercase letters, digits, and dashes. The captureGalaxy() method now blanks out any icon value that fails validation before persistence. CorrelationGraphTool::__createNode() now checks the icon against the validator and substitutes 'globe' for invalid stored values. Both correlation-graph.js and correlation-graphOvermind.js were changed from .html() string concatenation to .attr('class', ...) with a regex strip of non-conforming characters. AppController asset query version bumped from 225 to 226. A new PHPUnit test file (GalaxyIconNameTest.php) validates the icon name rule against known-good and known-bad payloads including the originally reported XSS vector.

CVSS rationale

AV:N: exploited over the network via the MISP web interface. AC:L: no race conditions or special timing; simply set the icon field and wait for a victim to view the graph. AT:N: no manipulation of the attack target required. PR:L: requires an authenticated user with perm_galaxy_editor, which is the default stock User role. UI:A: the victim must actively open the correlation graph of an event containing the affected galaxy cluster. VC/VI/VA:N: the server-side application is not directly compromised; the impact is on the victim's browser session. SC:H: script execution in the victim's session can read cookies, tokens, and sensitive page data. SI:H: the attacker can modify the victim's view, inject content, or trigger actions. SA:N: no availability impact on the system.

Weakness rationale
  • CWE-79 The galaxy icon field was stored without validation and later rendered into the DOM via D3 .html(), allowing an attacker to inject and execute arbitrary script in the victim's browser. This is a textbook stored XSS.
  • CWE-20 The root enabler is the absence of any server-side validation on the icon field at write time (add, edit, capture). The field accepted arbitrary strings including HTML markup, which was the precondition for the XSS.
Attack pattern rationale
  • CAPEC-1 The attack pattern is a stored XSS: an authenticated user with galaxy editor permission injects a script payload into a persistent data field (galaxy icon), which is later rendered unsanitized in another user's browser via the correlation graph. CAPEC-1 is the closest and most direct match. No more specific CAPEC entry for stored XSS via a data field rendered by a graphing library exists in the CAPEC catalog, so CAPEC-1 is the best available mapping.
Assumptions to verify
  • The affected version boundary is inferred from the tag_version_boundary metadata indicating the fix commit precedes v2.5.48 by 20 commits; no explicit 'fixed in' version is stated in the patch itself.
  • The perm_galaxy_editor permission is assumed to be granted to the stock User role as stated in the commit message; the exact role-permission mapping was not independently verified from the patch.
  • CAPEC-1 is the closest available mapping; no CAPEC entry specifically describes stored XSS via a graph-rendering library data field, so the general Cross Site Scripting pattern is used.
  • CVSS UI:A assumes the victim must navigate to the correlation graph view of a specific event; if the graph is auto-loaded on a commonly visited page, UI could be lowered to Passive.
  • The Co-Authored-By line references an AI assistant (Claude Fable 5.1); it is recorded as a tool credit rather than a human remediation developer.

The captureGalaxy() method now blanks out any icon value that fails validation before persistence. CorrelationGraphTool::__createNode() now checks the icon against the validator and substitutes \u0027globe\u0027 for invalid stored values. Both correlation-graph.js and correlation-graphOvermind.js were changed from .html() string concatenation to .attr(\u0027class\u0027, ...) with a regex strip of non-conforming characters. AppController asset query version bumped from 225 to 226. A new PHPUnit test file (GalaxyIconNameTest.php) validates the icon name rule against known-good and known-bad payloads including the originally reported XSS vector.",

Title
MISP EventsController queryEnrichment allows querying unavailable or legacy modules without validation
Summary
In MISP, the queryEnrichment method in EventsController.php accepted a module name parameter and iterated over the list of enabled modules to find a match. If the specified module was not present in the enabled modules list, the code silently continued processing using default parameters (format set to 'simplified' and no module-specific configuration applied) rather than rejecting the request. This allowed an authenticated user to trigger enrichment or analysis processing through a module that was not explicitly enabled or available on the instance, bypassing the intended module availability controls. The lack of validation meant that module names outside the enabled set were not rejected, potentially exposing functionality or data processing paths that the administrator had not authorized for use.

7dfcc4d32970 fix: [security] Harden misp modules module choice 799bc5310fbd…
Fix summary

The fix adds a moduleFound flag that is set only when the requested module name matches an entry in the enabled modules list. After the lookup loop completes, if the flag remains false, the method throws a MethodNotAllowedException with the message 'Module not found or not available,' effectively rejecting any query that references a module not present in the enabled set.

Patch summary

In app/Controller/EventsController.php, the queryEnrichment method is modified: a boolean variable $moduleFound is initialized to false before the foreach loop over $enabledModules['modules']. Inside the loop, when a module name matches, $moduleFound is set to true. After the loop, a new conditional block checks if $moduleFound is still false and throws a MethodNotAllowedException, preventing further processing with an unavailable module.

CVSS rationale

The vulnerability is exploitable over the network (AV:N) via the MISP web interface with low complexity (AC:L) and no attack target manipulation (AT:N). It requires a low-privilege authenticated user (PR:L) and no user interaction (UI:N). The primary impact is a low confidentiality impact (VC:L) because an authenticated user could trigger processing through a module not in the enabled set, potentially exposing data or processing results not intended to be available. No integrity or availability impact is evidenced (VI:N, VA:N). No secondary impacts are indicated (SC:N, SI:N, SA:N). The low impact reflects that the user already has authenticated access to the event and the exposure is limited to an additional module processing path.

Weakness rationale
  • CWE-20 The module name parameter supplied to queryEnrichment was not validated against the set of enabled/available modules. The code accepted any module name and, when no match was found, proceeded with default parameters instead of rejecting the input. The fix adds an explicit validation check that rejects the request when the module is not in the enabled list.
Attack pattern rationale
  • CAPEC-124 The closest plausible attack pattern is parameter tampering: an authenticated user supplies a module name in the queryEnrichment request that is not in the enabled modules list (e.g., a legacy or disabled module). The server previously accepted this parameter value and processed the request with defaults. The uncertainty is that the patch does not explicitly describe an active tampering scenario; it is a server-side validation gap. CAPEC-124 is selected as the best available match because the core mechanism is the manipulation of a request parameter to reference an unauthorized resource.
Assumptions to verify
  • The affected version range is inferred from the tag_version_boundary (v2.5.47 with 138 commits after fix); the exact last affected version and first fixed version are not explicitly stated in the patch metadata.
  • The security impact is assessed as low confidentiality impact based on the limited evidence; the actual data exposure depends on what legacy modules would process, which is not detailed in the patch.
  • CAPEC-124 (Parameter Tampering) is the closest available attack pattern; the actual scenario is a server-side input validation gap rather than an active tampering attack, so the mapping is approximate.
  • The patch does not specify whether the legacy module query could lead to code execution, data exfiltration, or other higher-impact consequences; the CVSS impact metrics are conservatively set to reflect only the evidenced behavior.
  • Authentication is assumed to be required (PR:L) based on MISP being an authenticated web application; the patch does not explicitly state authentication requirements.

Title
MISP Event Template Definition Validation Bypass Allows Persistent Denial of Service
Summary
A vulnerability in MISP's event template handling allowed an authenticated user with permission to create or modify event templates to bypass validation of the template definition field. The EventTemplate::beforeValidate() method only performed semantic validation when the supplied definition was already represented as an array. If a caller instead supplied a pre-encoded string, including malformed JSON or JSON representing an unexpected data type, the value bypassed validateDefinition() and only needed to satisfy the generic notBlank validation rule. As a result, an invalid event template definition could be stored persistently in the database. When event templates were subsequently retrieved, EventTemplate::afterFind() attempted to decode the stored definition using JsonTool::decode() without handling decoding failures. A definition containing invalid JSON could therefore trigger an exception during retrieval. Because the event template index is available to all authenticated users, a single malicious or malformed template could make the event template listing and other functionality relying on EventTemplate queries return HTTP 500 errors until the offending database row was manually repaired. Valid JSON representing an unexpected type, rather than the expected JSON object, could similarly result in invalid data reaching downstream consumers. The vulnerability can therefore be exploited by a user capable of saving event templates to persist malformed template data and cause a persistent denial of service against event-template functionality for other users. The patch enforces that event template definitions must be supplied as structured objects before saving and always applies semantic validation. On retrieval, malformed JSON and definitions that do not decode to the expected structure are caught, logged, and replaced with an empty definition, preventing a malformed database entry from breaking all event template queries.  Poisoning doesn't seem reachable according to the lead developer.

Title
Flowintel Login Email Validation Bypass Allows Log Injection via Crafted Email Input
Summary
Affected versions of Flowintel incorrectly attempted to validate login email addresses by calling Email(email). That does not perform WTForms field validation; it merely constructs a validator object. Consequently, malformed attacker-controlled email input could continue through the login process and be written to security-relevant logs. The vulnerable code inserted the supplied email into both a warning log and the custom audit logger. Since CR/LF characters were not escaped, an unauthenticated attacker could potentially inject additional physical log lines or forge misleading log entries. The patch corrects the validation call to Email()(form, form.email), changes the standard logging call to parameterized logging, and introduces _sanitize_log_fragment() so carriage returns and line feeds are encoded instead of creating new records. Version impacted >=3.3.0

Title
MISP: HTTP Method Override Bypasses CSRF and Form Validation in BetterSecurityComponent
Summary
Affected versions of MISP rely on CakePHP request-method override processing in a way that can disable CSRF and form-security validation. CakePHP honors a _method field or X-HTTP-Method-Override header by rewriting the effective request method. For override values outside the normal write verbs POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE, CakePHP also clears the parsed request body. MISP’s security component then determines whether to perform _validatePost() and _validateCsrf() based on whether request data remains. With a value such as: _method=GET the body becomes empty before those checks run, so both protections are skipped. A cross-site form containing only that override can therefore reach actions whose parameters are taken from the URL rather than the request body Version affected: ≤2.5.45

29af008c47d2 fix: [security] Refuse HTTP method overrides that empty the 97161c8af547…
Fix summary

The fix introduces a __rejectUnsafeMethodOverride() check in BetterSecurityComponent::startup() that executes before the parent SecurityComponent::startup() computes $hasData. It inspects both the _method POST field and the X-HTTP-Method-Override header (mirroring CakePHP's precedence) and rejects any value that is not a string in the allowed set {POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE}. Non-string values (e.g., array payloads like _method[]=GET) are also refused. A BadRequestException is thrown and the event is logged, preventing the request from ever reaching the parent security logic with an emptied body.

Patch summary

Adds a private __rejectUnsafeMethodOverride() method and a public startup() override to BetterSecurityComponent. The new method reads $_POST['_method'] and the HTTP_X_HTTP_METHOD_OVERRIDE header, applies the same header-over-body precedence as CakeRequest::_processPost(), and throws BadRequestException for any override that is not a string in the ALLOWED_METHOD_OVERRIDES constant (POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE). The startup() override calls this check before delegating to parent::startup(). A new test file BetterSecurityComponentTest.php (196 lines) covers pass-through of write verbs, refusal of non-write verbs, non-string overrides, header overrides, header-over-body precedence, and log output.

CVSS rationale

AV:N: The attack is delivered over the network via a crafted HTML form or HTTP header. AC:L: Exploitation requires only crafting a form with a _method field; no race conditions or complex timing are needed. AT:N: No manipulation of the target's data or state is required prior to the attack. PR:L: The victim must be an authenticated MISP user; no administrative privileges are needed. UI:P: The victim passively interacts with the attack (e.g., visiting a page with an auto-submitting form); no deliberate action beyond page load is required. VC:N: No confidentiality impact is evident from the patch evidence. VI:H: The attacker can perform arbitrary state-changing actions (enable/disable feeds, modify objects) on the victim's MISP instance, representing high integrity impact. VA:N: No availability impact is indicated. SC/SI/SA:N: No sub-component impact is evidenced.

Weakness rationale
  • CWE-352 The primary security impact is the complete bypass of CSRF token validation. An attacker can forge requests to state-changing MISP endpoints without a valid CSRF token by exploiting the method-override body-emptying behaviour.
  • CWE-20 The root cause is the failure to validate the _method override value before it influences the security component's behaviour. Any verb outside the expected write set is accepted by the framework and causes the request body to be discarded, disabling security checks.
Assumptions to verify
  • The fix is included in MISP v2.5.46 based on the tag_version_boundary metadata (228 commits after the fix commit at that tag); the exact affected version range prior to the fix is not explicitly stated in the patch.
  • PR:L assumes the victim must be an authenticated MISP user; the patch does not explicitly state authentication requirements, but MISP is an authenticated threat-intelligence platform and the example endpoint (/feeds/enable/2) implies an authenticated context.
  • UI:P assumes the typical CSRF delivery mechanism (auto-submitting form on a malicious page) where the victim's interaction is limited to loading the page; if a manual form submission is required, UI:A would be more appropriate.
  • The vulnerability was found during internal review and was not externally reported, per the commit message.

Title
Cisco Integrated Management Controller Authentication Bypass Vulnerability
Summary
A vulnerability in the change password functionality of Cisco Integrated Management Controller (IMC) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication and gain access to the system as Admin. This vulnerability is due to incorrect handling of password change requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to bypass authentication, alter the passwords of any user on the system, including an Admin user, and gain access to the system as that user.

Title
cti-transmute Saved Graph Configuration Allows Stored Cross-Site Scripting via svgIcon
Summary
Affected versions of cti-transmute insufficiently validate saved graph configuration data. Graph configurations can contain style properties that are later consumed by Pivotick, and Pivotick interprets svgIcon as HTML. Because saved configurations may be created by one user and later displayed to other users—including administrators—a malicious user could store a crafted svgIcon value that executes script in another viewer’s browser. The fix introduces a strict configuration schema on both the server and client. Only known properties are accepted, style entries are limited to shape, color, and size, and dangerous properties such as svgIcon and iconClass are explicitly rejected. Existing stored configurations are also sanitized when listed and again before being applied in the browser.

Title
MISP User-controlled order parameter in correlations over-correlation endpoint
Summary
A security issue was fixed in the correlations over-correlation endpoint where the order query parameter was accepted from user-controlled named request parameters. This allowed an authenticated user to override the server-defined ordering of over-correlating values. Depending on how the value was processed by the underlying data access layer, this could allow manipulation of database query ordering and potentially expose the application to unsafe query construction. The patch removes order from the set of request-controlled parameters and instead sets the ordering server-side to occurrence desc after processing allowed user parameters. Affected component: app/Controller/CorrelationsController.php, overCorrelations() Security impact: An authenticated attacker could influence the ordering clause used by the over-correlations query. The direct impact appears limited to query manipulation unless further evidence confirms SQL injection or unauthorized data exposure through the manipulated ordering expression.

Depending on how the value was processed by the underlying data access layer, this could allow manipulation of database query ordering and potentially expose the application to unsafe query construction.\n\nThe patch removes order from the set of request-controlled parameters and instead sets the ordering server-side to occurrence desc after processing allowed user parameters.\n\nAffected component:\napp/Controller/CorrelationsController.php, overCorrelations()\n\nSecurity impact:\nAn authenticated attacker could influence the ordering clause used by the over-correlations query. The direct impact appears limited to query manipulation unless further evidence confirms SQL injection or unauthorized data exposure through the manipulated ordering expression."

Title
Unauthenticated arbitrary MongoDB collection read in cve-search
Summary
An unauthenticated improper input validation vulnerability in the POST /fetch_cve_data endpoint in cve-search. A remote attacker can manipulate request parameters controlling the MongoDB collection, projected fields, and regular-expression filters to read arbitrary application MongoDB collections. This can expose administrative usernames and password hashes from the mgmt_users collection, enabling offline password cracking and potential administrative account compromise.

Title
MISP Dashboard Button Widget Allows Stored XSS via Unsafe javascript: and Backslash URLs
Summary
Affected versions of MISP insufficiently validate URLs used by dashboard widgets, particularly the Button widget. The widget's URL is stored configuration controlled by a user. The previous renderer considered a URL safe if it appeared relative or if its parsed hostname matched the configured MISP hostname. That logic failed to reject dangerous schemes and URL forms that browsers normalize differently from PHP's URL parsing. As a result, values such as javascript: URLs or backslash-based authority forms could reach the generated anchor's href and execute script or navigate to an attacker-controlled origin when another user interacted with the widget. The upstream commit describes the issue as: “javascript: and backslash URLs reached the href (stored XSS)”. The fix routes widget URLs through a shared DashboardURLValidator, rejects dangerous schemes, raw backslashes, control characters, and unauthorized absolute origins, and validates the URL both in the widget handler and renderer. Version affected: ≤2.5.45

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

Consider using language-theoretic security (LangSec) techniques that characterize inputs using a formal language and build "recognizers" for that language. This effectively requires parsing to be a distinct layer that effectively enforces a boundary between raw input and internal data representations, instead of allowing parser code to be scattered throughout the program, where it could be subject to errors or inconsistencies that create weaknesses. [REF-1109] [REF-1110] [REF-1111]

Mitigation MIT-7
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

Use an input validation framework such as Struts or the OWASP ESAPI Validation API. Note that using a framework does not automatically address all input validation problems; be mindful of weaknesses that could arise from misusing the framework itself (CWE-1173).

Mitigation MIT-6
Architecture and Design Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

Understand all the potential areas where untrusted inputs can enter the product, including but not limited to: parameters or arguments, cookies, anything read from the network, environment variables, reverse DNS lookups, query results, request headers, URL components, e-mail, files, filenames, databases, and any external systems that provide data to the application. Remember that such inputs may be obtained indirectly through API calls.

Mitigation MIT-5
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design
  • For any security checks that are performed on the client side, ensure that these checks are duplicated on the server side, in order to avoid CWE-602. Attackers can bypass the client-side checks by modifying values after the checks have been performed, or by changing the client to remove the client-side checks entirely. Then, these modified values would be submitted to the server.
  • Even though client-side checks provide minimal benefits with respect to server-side security, they are still useful. First, they can support intrusion detection. If the server receives input that should have been rejected by the client, then it may be an indication of an attack. Second, client-side error-checking can provide helpful feedback to the user about the expectations for valid input. Third, there may be a reduction in server-side processing time for accidental input errors, although this is typically a small savings.
Mitigation
Implementation

When your application combines data from multiple sources, perform the validation after the sources have been combined. The individual data elements may pass the validation step but violate the intended restrictions after they have been combined.

Mitigation MIT-35
Implementation

Be especially careful to validate all input when invoking code that crosses language boundaries, such as from an interpreted language to native code. This could create an unexpected interaction between the language boundaries. Ensure that you are not violating any of the expectations of the language with which you are interfacing. For example, even though Java may not be susceptible to buffer overflows, providing a large argument in a call to native code might trigger an overflow.

Mitigation
Implementation

Directly convert your input type into the expected data type, such as using a conversion function that translates a string into a number. After converting to the expected data type, ensure that the input's values fall within the expected range of allowable values and that multi-field consistencies are maintained.

Mitigation
Implementation
  • Inputs should be decoded and canonicalized to the application's current internal representation before being validated (CWE-180, CWE-181). Make sure that your application does not inadvertently decode the same input twice (CWE-174). Such errors could be used to bypass allowlist schemes by introducing dangerous inputs after they have been checked. Use libraries such as the OWASP ESAPI Canonicalization control.
  • Consider performing repeated canonicalization until your input does not change any more. This will avoid double-decoding and similar scenarios, but it might inadvertently modify inputs that are allowed to contain properly-encoded dangerous content.
Mitigation
Implementation

When exchanging data between components, ensure that both components are using the same character encoding. Ensure that the proper encoding is applied at each interface. Explicitly set the encoding you are using whenever the protocol allows you to do so.

CAPEC-10: Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables

This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the adversary finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.

CAPEC-101: Server Side Include (SSI) Injection

An attacker can use Server Side Include (SSI) Injection to send code to a web application that then gets executed by the web server. Doing so enables the attacker to achieve similar results to Cross Site Scripting, viz., arbitrary code execution and information disclosure, albeit on a more limited scale, since the SSI directives are nowhere near as powerful as a full-fledged scripting language. Nonetheless, the attacker can conveniently gain access to sensitive files, such as password files, and execute shell commands.

CAPEC-104: Cross Zone Scripting

An attacker is able to cause a victim to load content into their web-browser that bypasses security zone controls and gain access to increased privileges to execute scripting code or other web objects such as unsigned ActiveX controls or applets. This is a privilege elevation attack targeted at zone-based web-browser security.

CAPEC-108: Command Line Execution through SQL Injection

An attacker uses standard SQL injection methods to inject data into the command line for execution. This could be done directly through misuse of directives such as MSSQL_xp_cmdshell or indirectly through injection of data into the database that would be interpreted as shell commands. Sometime later, an unscrupulous backend application (or could be part of the functionality of the same application) fetches the injected data stored in the database and uses this data as command line arguments without performing proper validation. The malicious data escapes that data plane by spawning new commands to be executed on the host.

CAPEC-109: Object Relational Mapping Injection

An attacker leverages a weakness present in the database access layer code generated with an Object Relational Mapping (ORM) tool or a weakness in the way that a developer used a persistence framework to inject their own SQL commands to be executed against the underlying database. The attack here is similar to plain SQL injection, except that the application does not use JDBC to directly talk to the database, but instead it uses a data access layer generated by an ORM tool or framework (e.g. Hibernate). While most of the time code generated by an ORM tool contains safe access methods that are immune to SQL injection, sometimes either due to some weakness in the generated code or due to the fact that the developer failed to use the generated access methods properly, SQL injection is still possible.

CAPEC-110: SQL Injection through SOAP Parameter Tampering

An attacker modifies the parameters of the SOAP message that is sent from the service consumer to the service provider to initiate a SQL injection attack. On the service provider side, the SOAP message is parsed and parameters are not properly validated before being used to access a database in a way that does not use parameter binding, thus enabling the attacker to control the structure of the executed SQL query. This pattern describes a SQL injection attack with the delivery mechanism being a SOAP message.

CAPEC-120: Double Encoding

The adversary utilizes a repeating of the encoding process for a set of characters (that is, character encoding a character encoding of a character) to obfuscate the payload of a particular request. This may allow the adversary to bypass filters that attempt to detect illegal characters or strings, such as those that might be used in traversal or injection attacks. Filters may be able to catch illegal encoded strings, but may not catch doubly encoded strings. For example, a dot (.), often used in path traversal attacks and therefore often blocked by filters, could be URL encoded as %2E. However, many filters recognize this encoding and would still block the request. In a double encoding, the % in the above URL encoding would be encoded again as %25, resulting in %252E which some filters might not catch, but which could still be interpreted as a dot (.) by interpreters on the target.

CAPEC-13: Subverting Environment Variable Values

The adversary directly or indirectly modifies environment variables used by or controlling the target software. The adversary's goal is to cause the target software to deviate from its expected operation in a manner that benefits the adversary.

CAPEC-135: Format String Injection

An adversary includes formatting characters in a string input field on the target application. Most applications assume that users will provide static text and may respond unpredictably to the presence of formatting character. For example, in certain functions of the C programming languages such as printf, the formatting character %s will print the contents of a memory location expecting this location to identify a string and the formatting character %n prints the number of DWORD written in the memory. An adversary can use this to read or write to memory locations or files, or simply to manipulate the value of the resulting text in unexpected ways. Reading or writing memory may result in program crashes and writing memory could result in the execution of arbitrary code if the adversary can write to the program stack.

CAPEC-136: LDAP Injection

An attacker manipulates or crafts an LDAP query for the purpose of undermining the security of the target. Some applications use user input to create LDAP queries that are processed by an LDAP server. For example, a user might provide their username during authentication and the username might be inserted in an LDAP query during the authentication process. An attacker could use this input to inject additional commands into an LDAP query that could disclose sensitive information. For example, entering a * in the aforementioned query might return information about all users on the system. This attack is very similar to an SQL injection attack in that it manipulates a query to gather additional information or coerce a particular return value.

CAPEC-14: Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow

This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service. This hostile service is created to deliver the correct content to the client software. For example, if the client-side application is a browser, the service will host a webpage that the browser loads.

CAPEC-153: Input Data Manipulation

An attacker exploits a weakness in input validation by controlling the format, structure, and composition of data to an input-processing interface. By supplying input of a non-standard or unexpected form an attacker can adversely impact the security of the target.

CAPEC-182: Flash Injection

An attacker tricks a victim to execute malicious flash content that executes commands or makes flash calls specified by the attacker. One example of this attack is cross-site flashing, an attacker controlled parameter to a reference call loads from content specified by the attacker.

CAPEC-209: XSS Using MIME Type Mismatch

An adversary creates a file with scripting content but where the specified MIME type of the file is such that scripting is not expected. The adversary tricks the victim into accessing a URL that responds with the script file. Some browsers will detect that the specified MIME type of the file does not match the actual type of its content and will automatically switch to using an interpreter for the real content type. If the browser does not invoke script filters before doing this, the adversary's script may run on the target unsanitized, possibly revealing the victim's cookies or executing arbitrary script in their browser.

CAPEC-22: Exploiting Trust in Client

An attack of this type exploits vulnerabilities in client/server communication channel authentication and data integrity. It leverages the implicit trust a server places in the client, or more importantly, that which the server believes is the client. An attacker executes this type of attack by communicating directly with the server where the server believes it is communicating only with a valid client. There are numerous variations of this type of attack.

CAPEC-23: File Content Injection

An adversary poisons files with a malicious payload (targeting the file systems accessible by the target software), which may be passed through by standard channels such as via email, and standard web content like PDF and multimedia files. The adversary exploits known vulnerabilities or handling routines in the target processes, in order to exploit the host's trust in executing remote content, including binary files.

CAPEC-230: Serialized Data with Nested Payloads

Applications often need to transform data in and out of a data format (e.g., XML and YAML) by using a parser. It may be possible for an adversary to inject data that may have an adverse effect on the parser when it is being processed. Many data format languages allow the definition of macro-like structures that can be used to simplify the creation of complex structures. By nesting these structures, causing the data to be repeatedly substituted, an adversary can cause the parser to consume more resources while processing, causing excessive memory consumption and CPU utilization.

CAPEC-231: Oversized Serialized Data Payloads

An adversary injects oversized serialized data payloads into a parser during data processing to produce adverse effects upon the parser such as exhausting system resources and arbitrary code execution.

CAPEC-24: Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow

In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).

CAPEC-250: XML Injection

An attacker utilizes crafted XML user-controllable input to probe, attack, and inject data into the XML database, using techniques similar to SQL injection. The user-controllable input can allow for unauthorized viewing of data, bypassing authentication or the front-end application for direct XML database access, and possibly altering database information.

CAPEC-261: Fuzzing for garnering other adjacent user/sensitive data

An adversary who is authorized to send queries to a target sends variants of expected queries in the hope that these modified queries might return information (directly or indirectly through error logs) beyond what the expected set of queries should provide.

CAPEC-267: Leverage Alternate Encoding

An adversary leverages the possibility to encode potentially harmful input or content used by applications such that the applications are ineffective at validating this encoding standard.

CAPEC-28: Fuzzing

In this attack pattern, the adversary leverages fuzzing to try to identify weaknesses in the system. Fuzzing is a software security and functionality testing method that feeds randomly constructed input to the system and looks for an indication that a failure in response to that input has occurred. Fuzzing treats the system as a black box and is totally free from any preconceptions or assumptions about the system. Fuzzing can help an attacker discover certain assumptions made about user input in the system. Fuzzing gives an attacker a quick way of potentially uncovering some of these assumptions despite not necessarily knowing anything about the internals of the system. These assumptions can then be turned against the system by specially crafting user input that may allow an attacker to achieve their goals.

CAPEC-3: Using Leading 'Ghost' Character Sequences to Bypass Input Filters

Some APIs will strip certain leading characters from a string of parameters. An adversary can intentionally introduce leading "ghost" characters (extra characters that don't affect the validity of the request at the API layer) that enable the input to pass the filters and therefore process the adversary's input. This occurs when the targeted API will accept input data in several syntactic forms and interpret it in the equivalent semantic way, while the filter does not take into account the full spectrum of the syntactic forms acceptable to the targeted API.

CAPEC-31: Accessing/Intercepting/Modifying HTTP Cookies

This attack relies on the use of HTTP Cookies to store credentials, state information and other critical data on client systems. There are several different forms of this attack. The first form of this attack involves accessing HTTP Cookies to mine for potentially sensitive data contained therein. The second form involves intercepting this data as it is transmitted from client to server. This intercepted information is then used by the adversary to impersonate the remote user/session. The third form is when the cookie's content is modified by the adversary before it is sent back to the server. Here the adversary seeks to convince the target server to operate on this falsified information.

CAPEC-42: MIME Conversion

An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

CAPEC-43: Exploiting Multiple Input Interpretation Layers

An attacker supplies the target software with input data that contains sequences of special characters designed to bypass input validation logic. This exploit relies on the target making multiples passes over the input data and processing a "layer" of special characters with each pass. In this manner, the attacker can disguise input that would otherwise be rejected as invalid by concealing it with layers of special/escape characters that are stripped off by subsequent processing steps. The goal is to first discover cases where the input validation layer executes before one or more parsing layers. That is, user input may go through the following logic in an application: <parser1> --> <input validator> --> <parser2>. In such cases, the attacker will need to provide input that will pass through the input validator, but after passing through parser2, will be converted into something that the input validator was supposed to stop.

CAPEC-45: Buffer Overflow via Symbolic Links

This type of attack leverages the use of symbolic links to cause buffer overflows. An adversary can try to create or manipulate a symbolic link file such that its contents result in out of bounds data. When the target software processes the symbolic link file, it could potentially overflow internal buffers with insufficient bounds checking.

CAPEC-46: Overflow Variables and Tags

This type of attack leverages the use of tags or variables from a formatted configuration data to cause buffer overflow. The adversary crafts a malicious HTML page or configuration file that includes oversized strings, thus causing an overflow.

CAPEC-47: Buffer Overflow via Parameter Expansion

In this attack, the target software is given input that the adversary knows will be modified and expanded in size during processing. This attack relies on the target software failing to anticipate that the expanded data may exceed some internal limit, thereby creating a buffer overflow.

CAPEC-473: Signature Spoof

An attacker generates a message or datablock that causes the recipient to believe that the message or datablock was generated and cryptographically signed by an authoritative or reputable source, misleading a victim or victim operating system into performing malicious actions.

CAPEC-52: Embedding NULL Bytes

An adversary embeds one or more null bytes in input to the target software. This attack relies on the usage of a null-valued byte as a string terminator in many environments. The goal is for certain components of the target software to stop processing the input when it encounters the null byte(s).

CAPEC-53: Postfix, Null Terminate, and Backslash

If a string is passed through a filter of some kind, then a terminal NULL may not be valid. Using alternate representation of NULL allows an adversary to embed the NULL mid-string while postfixing the proper data so that the filter is avoided. One example is a filter that looks for a trailing slash character. If a string insertion is possible, but the slash must exist, an alternate encoding of NULL in mid-string may be used.

CAPEC-588: DOM-Based XSS

This type of attack is a form of Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) where a malicious script is inserted into the client-side HTML being parsed by a web browser. Content served by a vulnerable web application includes script code used to manipulate the Document Object Model (DOM). This script code either does not properly validate input, or does not perform proper output encoding, thus creating an opportunity for an adversary to inject a malicious script launch a XSS attack. A key distinction between other XSS attacks and DOM-based attacks is that in other XSS attacks, the malicious script runs when the vulnerable web page is initially loaded, while a DOM-based attack executes sometime after the page loads. Another distinction of DOM-based attacks is that in some cases, the malicious script is never sent to the vulnerable web server at all. An attack like this is guaranteed to bypass any server-side filtering attempts to protect users.

CAPEC-63: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)

An adversary embeds malicious scripts in content that will be served to web browsers. The goal of the attack is for the target software, the client-side browser, to execute the script with the users' privilege level. An attack of this type exploits a programs' vulnerabilities that are brought on by allowing remote hosts to execute code and scripts. Web browsers, for example, have some simple security controls in place, but if a remote attacker is allowed to execute scripts (through injecting them in to user-generated content like bulletin boards) then these controls may be bypassed. Further, these attacks are very difficult for an end user to detect.

CAPEC-64: Using Slashes and URL Encoding Combined to Bypass Validation Logic

This attack targets the encoding of the URL combined with the encoding of the slash characters. An attacker can take advantage of the multiple ways of encoding a URL and abuse the interpretation of the URL. A URL may contain special character that need special syntax handling in order to be interpreted. Special characters are represented using a percentage character followed by two digits representing the octet code of the original character (%HEX-CODE). For instance US-ASCII space character would be represented with %20. This is often referred as escaped ending or percent-encoding. Since the server decodes the URL from the requests, it may restrict the access to some URL paths by validating and filtering out the URL requests it received. An attacker will try to craft an URL with a sequence of special characters which once interpreted by the server will be equivalent to a forbidden URL. It can be difficult to protect against this attack since the URL can contain other format of encoding such as UTF-8 encoding, Unicode-encoding, etc.

CAPEC-664: Server Side Request Forgery

An adversary exploits improper input validation by submitting maliciously crafted input to a target application running on a server, with the goal of forcing the server to make a request either to itself, to web services running in the server’s internal network, or to external third parties. If successful, the adversary’s request will be made with the server’s privilege level, bypassing its authentication controls. This ultimately allows the adversary to access sensitive data, execute commands on the server’s network, and make external requests with the stolen identity of the server. Server Side Request Forgery attacks differ from Cross Site Request Forgery attacks in that they target the server itself, whereas CSRF attacks exploit an insecure user authentication mechanism to perform unauthorized actions on the user's behalf.

CAPEC-67: String Format Overflow in syslog()

This attack targets applications and software that uses the syslog() function insecurely. If an application does not explicitely use a format string parameter in a call to syslog(), user input can be placed in the format string parameter leading to a format string injection attack. Adversaries can then inject malicious format string commands into the function call leading to a buffer overflow. There are many reported software vulnerabilities with the root cause being a misuse of the syslog() function.

CAPEC-7: Blind SQL Injection

Blind SQL Injection results from an insufficient mitigation for SQL Injection. Although suppressing database error messages are considered best practice, the suppression alone is not sufficient to prevent SQL Injection. Blind SQL Injection is a form of SQL Injection that overcomes the lack of error messages. Without the error messages that facilitate SQL Injection, the adversary constructs input strings that probe the target through simple Boolean SQL expressions. The adversary can determine if the syntax and structure of the injection was successful based on whether the query was executed or not. Applied iteratively, the adversary determines how and where the target is vulnerable to SQL Injection.

CAPEC-71: Using Unicode Encoding to Bypass Validation Logic

An attacker may provide a Unicode string to a system component that is not Unicode aware and use that to circumvent the filter or cause the classifying mechanism to fail to properly understanding the request. That may allow the attacker to slip malicious data past the content filter and/or possibly cause the application to route the request incorrectly.

CAPEC-72: URL Encoding

This attack targets the encoding of the URL. An adversary can take advantage of the multiple way of encoding an URL and abuse the interpretation of the URL.

CAPEC-73: User-Controlled Filename

An attack of this type involves an adversary inserting malicious characters (such as a XSS redirection) into a filename, directly or indirectly that is then used by the target software to generate HTML text or other potentially executable content. Many websites rely on user-generated content and dynamically build resources like files, filenames, and URL links directly from user supplied data. In this attack pattern, the attacker uploads code that can execute in the client browser and/or redirect the client browser to a site that the attacker owns. All XSS attack payload variants can be used to pass and exploit these vulnerabilities.

CAPEC-78: Using Escaped Slashes in Alternate Encoding

This attack targets the use of the backslash in alternate encoding. An adversary can provide a backslash as a leading character and causes a parser to believe that the next character is special. This is called an escape. By using that trick, the adversary tries to exploit alternate ways to encode the same character which leads to filter problems and opens avenues to attack.

CAPEC-79: Using Slashes in Alternate Encoding

This attack targets the encoding of the Slash characters. An adversary would try to exploit common filtering problems related to the use of the slashes characters to gain access to resources on the target host. Directory-driven systems, such as file systems and databases, typically use the slash character to indicate traversal between directories or other container components. For murky historical reasons, PCs (and, as a result, Microsoft OSs) choose to use a backslash, whereas the UNIX world typically makes use of the forward slash. The schizophrenic result is that many MS-based systems are required to understand both forms of the slash. This gives the adversary many opportunities to discover and abuse a number of common filtering problems. The goal of this pattern is to discover server software that only applies filters to one version, but not the other.

CAPEC-8: Buffer Overflow in an API Call

This attack targets libraries or shared code modules which are vulnerable to buffer overflow attacks. An adversary who has knowledge of known vulnerable libraries or shared code can easily target software that makes use of these libraries. All clients that make use of the code library thus become vulnerable by association. This has a very broad effect on security across a system, usually affecting more than one software process.

CAPEC-80: Using UTF-8 Encoding to Bypass Validation Logic

This attack is a specific variation on leveraging alternate encodings to bypass validation logic. This attack leverages the possibility to encode potentially harmful input in UTF-8 and submit it to applications not expecting or effective at validating this encoding standard making input filtering difficult. UTF-8 (8-bit UCS/Unicode Transformation Format) is a variable-length character encoding for Unicode. Legal UTF-8 characters are one to four bytes long. However, early version of the UTF-8 specification got some entries wrong (in some cases it permitted overlong characters). UTF-8 encoders are supposed to use the "shortest possible" encoding, but naive decoders may accept encodings that are longer than necessary. According to the RFC 3629, a particularly subtle form of this attack can be carried out against a parser which performs security-critical validity checks against the UTF-8 encoded form of its input, but interprets certain illegal octet sequences as characters.

CAPEC-81: Web Server Logs Tampering

Web Logs Tampering attacks involve an attacker injecting, deleting or otherwise tampering with the contents of web logs typically for the purposes of masking other malicious behavior. Additionally, writing malicious data to log files may target jobs, filters, reports, and other agents that process the logs in an asynchronous attack pattern. This pattern of attack is similar to "Log Injection-Tampering-Forging" except that in this case, the attack is targeting the logs of the web server and not the application.

CAPEC-83: XPath Injection

An attacker can craft special user-controllable input consisting of XPath expressions to inject the XML database and bypass authentication or glean information that they normally would not be able to. XPath Injection enables an attacker to talk directly to the XML database, thus bypassing the application completely. XPath Injection results from the failure of an application to properly sanitize input used as part of dynamic XPath expressions used to query an XML database.

CAPEC-85: AJAX Footprinting

This attack utilizes the frequent client-server roundtrips in Ajax conversation to scan a system. While Ajax does not open up new vulnerabilities per se, it does optimize them from an attacker point of view. A common first step for an attacker is to footprint the target environment to understand what attacks will work. Since footprinting relies on enumeration, the conversational pattern of rapid, multiple requests and responses that are typical in Ajax applications enable an attacker to look for many vulnerabilities, well-known ports, network locations and so on. The knowledge gained through Ajax fingerprinting can be used to support other attacks, such as XSS.

CAPEC-88: OS Command Injection

In this type of an attack, an adversary injects operating system commands into existing application functions. An application that uses untrusted input to build command strings is vulnerable. An adversary can leverage OS command injection in an application to elevate privileges, execute arbitrary commands and compromise the underlying operating system.

CAPEC-9: Buffer Overflow in Local Command-Line Utilities

This attack targets command-line utilities available in a number of shells. An adversary can leverage a vulnerability found in a command-line utility to escalate privilege to root.
