Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-190

Allowed

Integer Overflow or Wraparound

Abstraction: Base · Status: Stable

The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

4601 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Summary
Vapor vulnerable to denial of service in HTTP Range Request of FileMiddleware
Details

Vapor is an HTTP web framework for Swift and middleware is a logic chain between the client and a Vapor route handler. FileMiddleware enables the serving of assets from the Public folder of a project to the client.

Vapor before 4.60.3 is vulnerable to denial of service due to an integer overflow when given invalid range headers while using FileMiddleware. This is patched in 4.60.3.

GHSA-VJ88-PPR4-HJ46

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-24 18:32 – Updated: 2026-09-04 15:35
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dm log: fix out-of-bounds write due to region_count overflow

The local variable region_count in create_log_context() is declared as unsigned int (32-bit), but dm_sector_div_up() returns sector_t (64-bit). When a device-mapper target has a sufficiently large ti->len with a small region_size, the division result can exceed UINT_MAX. The truncated value is then used to calculate bitset_size, causing clean_bits, sync_bits, and recovering_bits to be allocated far smaller than needed for the actual number of regions.

Subsequent log operations (log_set_bit, log_clear_bit, log_test_bit) use region indices derived from the full untruncated region space, causing out-of-bounds writes to kernel heap memory allocated by vmalloc.

This can be reproduced by creating a mirror target whose region_count overflows 32 bits:

dmsetup create bigzero --table '0 8589934594 zero' dmsetup create mymirror --table '0 8589934594 mirror \ core 2 2 nosync 2 /dev/mapper/bigzero 0 \ /dev/mapper/bigzero 0'

The status output confirms the truncation (sync_count=1 instead of 4294967297, because 0x100000001 was truncated to 1):

$ dmsetup status mymirror 0 8589934594 mirror 2 254:1 254:1 1/4294967297 ...

This leads to a kernel crash in core_in_sync:

BUG: scheduling while atomic: (udev-worker)/9150/0x00000000 RIP: 0010:core_in_sync+0x14/0x30 [dm_log] CR2: 0000000000000008 Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

Fix by widening the local region_count to sector_t and adding an explicit overflow check before the value is assigned to lc->region_count.

GHSA-VM8M-G3FG-CR9M

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-11-19 03:31 – Updated: 2024-11-27 00:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mm/damon/core: avoid overflow in damon_feed_loop_next_input()

damon_feed_loop_next_input() is inefficient and fragile to overflows. Specifically, 'score_goal_diff_bp' calculation can overflow when 'score' is high. The calculation is actually unnecessary at all because 'goal' is a constant of value 10,000. Calculation of 'compensation' is again fragile to overflow. Final calculation of return value for under-achiving case is again fragile to overflow when the current score is under-achieving the target.

Add two corner cases handling at the beginning of the function to make the body easier to read, and rewrite the body of the function to avoid overflows and the unnecessary bp value calcuation.

Details

An integer overflow in ext4fs_read_symlink in Das U-Boot before 2025.01-rc1 occurs for zalloc (adding one to an le32 variable) via a crafted ext4 filesystem with an inode size of 0xffffffff, resulting in a malloc of zero and resultant memory overwrite.

Mitigation
Requirements

Ensure that all protocols are strictly defined, such that all out-of-bounds behavior can be identified simply, and require strict conformance to the protocol.

Mitigation MIT-3
Requirements

Strategy: Language Selection

  • Use a language that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid.
  • If possible, choose a language or compiler that performs automatic bounds checking.
Mitigation MIT-4
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

  • Use a vetted library or framework that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid [REF-1482].
  • Use libraries or frameworks that make it easier to handle numbers without unexpected consequences.
  • Examples include safe integer handling packages such as SafeInt (C++) or IntegerLib (C or C++). [REF-106]
Mitigation MIT-8
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Perform input validation on any numeric input by ensuring that it is within the expected range. Enforce that the input meets both the minimum and maximum requirements for the expected range.
  • Use unsigned integers where possible. This makes it easier to perform validation for integer overflows. When signed integers are required, ensure that the range check includes minimum values as well as maximum values.
Mitigation MIT-36
Implementation
  • Understand the programming language's underlying representation and how it interacts with numeric calculation (CWE-681). Pay close attention to byte size discrepancies, precision, signed/unsigned distinctions, truncation, conversion and casting between types, "not-a-number" calculations, and how the language handles numbers that are too large or too small for its underlying representation. [REF-7]
  • Also be careful to account for 32-bit, 64-bit, and other potential differences that may affect the numeric representation.
Mitigation MIT-15
Architecture and Design

For any security checks that are performed on the client side, ensure that these checks are duplicated on the server side, in order to avoid CWE-602. Attackers can bypass the client-side checks by modifying values after the checks have been performed, or by changing the client to remove the client-side checks entirely. Then, these modified values would be submitted to the server.

Mitigation MIT-26
Implementation

Strategy: Compilation or Build Hardening

Examine compiler warnings closely and eliminate problems with potential security implications, such as signed / unsigned mismatch in memory operations, or use of uninitialized variables. Even if the weakness is rarely exploitable, a single failure may lead to the compromise of the entire system.

CAPEC-92: Forced Integer Overflow

This attack forces an integer variable to go out of range. The integer variable is often used as an offset such as size of memory allocation or similarly. The attacker would typically control the value of such variable and try to get it out of range. For instance the integer in question is incremented past the maximum possible value, it may wrap to become a very small, or negative number, therefore providing a very incorrect value which can lead to unexpected behavior. At worst the attacker can execute arbitrary code.
