CWE-122
AllowedHeap-based Buffer Overflow
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft
A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc().
6218 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.
GHSA-MGV2-4J37-M3X6
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-19 18:32 – Updated: 2026-10-19 12:31A heap buffer overflow vulnerability was found in libaom, the reference AV1 codec implementation. A flaw in the AV1 encoder's Look-Ahead Processing (LAP) mode causes the first-pass stats ring buffer wrap-around guard to be bypassed when g_lag_in_frames is set to 1 or higher. This results in a 232-byte out-of-bounds write on every encoded frame after the second, corrupting adjacent heap objects. An attacker who can influence encoder configuration in a transcoding service or WebRTC session could exploit this to cause a denial of service (process crash) or potentially achieve code execution.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-10-08 12:34 – Updated: 2026-10-08 12:34Heap-based buffer overflow in the legacy Blowfish decryption routine (BlowFishEncryptor::DecryptFromString) in Progressive Robot hMailServer 6.0.0 through 6.3.3 on Windows allows a local interactive user with no hMailServer credentials to write bytes of their choosing past the end of a 255-byte heap buffer in the hMailServer service process, which runs as LocalSystem by default. The user does this by passing a long hexadecimal string to the COM method Utilities.BlowfishDecrypt, which checked no authentication. The routine converted hexadecimal input of any length into a fixed 255-byte buffer before decrypting it in place. The result is a denial of service (service crash), and possibly code execution with the privileges of the service account.

GHSA-MH4X-QPF6-HR3Q
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-05-06 12:30 – Updated: 2026-05-06 12:30A type confusion vulnerability in Qt SVG allows an attacker to cause an application crash via a crafted SVG image.
When processing SVG marker references, the renderer retrieves a node by its id attribute and casts it to QSvgMarker* without verifying the node type. A non-marker element (such as a element) that references itself as a marker triggers an out-of-bounds heap read due to the object size difference between QSvgLine and QSvgMarker, followed by an endless recursion that bypasses the marker recursion guard through incorrect virtual dispatch. The result is an application crash (denial of service).
This issue affects Qt SVG: from 6.7.0 before 6.8.8, from 6.9.0 before 6.11.1.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-03 03:31 – Updated: 2025-11-04 21:31GIMP DDS File Parsing Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DDS files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-22093.

GHSA-MHP6-JVPX-2P4M
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-08-29 18:31 – Updated: 2023-09-01 01:19A heap-based buffer overflow exists in the qr_reader_match_centers function of ZBar 0.23.90. Specially crafted QR codes may lead to information disclosure and/or arbitrary code execution. To trigger this vulnerability, an attacker can digitally input the malicious QR code, or prepare it to be physically scanned by the vulnerable scanner.

Mitigation
Pre-design: Use a language or compiler that performs automatic bounds checking.
Mitigation
Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.
Mitigation MIT-10
Strategy: Environment Hardening
- Use automatic buffer overflow detection mechanisms that are offered by certain compilers or compiler extensions. Examples include: the Microsoft Visual Studio /GS flag, Fedora/Red Hat FORTIFY_SOURCE GCC flag, StackGuard, and ProPolice, which provide various mechanisms including canary-based detection and range/index checking.
- D3-SFCV (Stack Frame Canary Validation) from D3FEND [REF-1334] discusses canary-based detection in detail.
Mitigation MIT-11
Strategy: Environment Hardening
- Run or compile the software using features or extensions that randomly arrange the positions of a program's executable and libraries in memory. Because this makes the addresses unpredictable, it can prevent an attacker from reliably jumping to exploitable code.
- Examples include Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) [REF-58] [REF-60] and Position-Independent Executables (PIE) [REF-64]. Imported modules may be similarly realigned if their default memory addresses conflict with other modules, in a process known as "rebasing" (for Windows) and "prelinking" (for Linux) [REF-1332] using randomly generated addresses. ASLR for libraries cannot be used in conjunction with prelink since it would require relocating the libraries at run-time, defeating the whole purpose of prelinking.
- For more information on these techniques see D3-SAOR (Segment Address Offset Randomization) from D3FEND [REF-1335].
Mitigation
Implement and perform bounds checking on input.
Mitigation
Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks
Do not use dangerous functions such as gets. Look for their safe equivalent, which checks for the boundary.
Mitigation
Use OS-level preventative functionality. This is not a complete solution, but it provides some defense in depth.
CAPEC-92: Forced Integer Overflow
This attack forces an integer variable to go out of range. The integer variable is often used as an offset such as size of memory allocation or similarly. The attacker would typically control the value of such variable and try to get it out of range. For instance the integer in question is incremented past the maximum possible value, it may wrap to become a very small, or negative number, therefore providing a very incorrect value which can lead to unexpected behavior. At worst the attacker can execute arbitrary code.
